⚡️Three Phases of Detox🚨

Detoxification begins with bioactivation, continues with conjugation, and concludes with transport (before the process repeats itself as your body engages its natural mechanisms for detoxification).

Your body’s natural detoxification process can be thought of as a “biotransformation” system that identifies, binds, and rids the body of toxins we’re exposed to regularly. Here are some simple ways to tell if you have toxins in your body.

💡 1. Bioactivation:
The first phase of detox is catalyzed by a handful of enzymes, primarily from the cytochrome P450 family (CYP450). In these enzymatic reactions, a reactive group is added to a toxin, generating a reactive site that can easily attach itself to other molecules. During bioactivation, toxins are transformed into reactive intermediates that need quick neutralization.

Cruciferous vegetables like Brussels sprouts, Spanish black radish, and kale activate CYP450 enzymes needed during bioactivation. Antioxidant nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E, minerals like selenium, copper, zinc, and manganese, as well as coenzyme Q10 and several phytonutrients have antioxidant activity that may also support phase one of detox.

💡 2. Conjugation
During phase two, conjugation enzymes convert the reactive intermediates created during bioactivation into non-toxic, water-soluble molecules. Phase II conjugation enzymes include:

Sulfotransferases (SULT)
UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGT)
Glutathione S-transferases (GST)
N-acetyltransferases (NAT)

Conjugation uses a lot of energy in the form of ATP and requires robust nutritional support in the form of B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, and other nutrients. Healthy sources of protein are also important for the conjugation phase of detox, specifically the amino acid glycine to help remove toxins.

💡3. Transport
During the third and final phase of detox, neutralised toxins are transported or eliminated from the body.

Your Energy Levels On A Detox: From Fatigued To Fabulous 💭

Our energy levels on a detox program can vary for different reasons; some may feel more tired during detox, and some may feel more energetic than ever. Both are completely normal and can happen in waves during a detox. Thankfully, even if you’re feeling fatigued a few days into your detox, chances are there are good reasons why — and they’re temporary!

💡Why does detox make me sleepy?

As you detox, your body is resetting, returning to its normal ability to detoxify naturally. In the process, you’re moving built-up toxins from your body – from your very cells – and getting them out. That process is both new and energy-draining. Our bodies want things to be efficient, easy, and thought-free – and a new habit or process can take additional energy to get to that point.

Feeling tired or fatigued during detox is normal, and is likely a side effect of your changing habits as you provide nutritional support for your body’s natural detoxification process. However, we should also acknowledge that the very mechanism of action of metabolic detox requires energy and nutrients for each of the 🔜three detox stages👇 (to be discussed in a follow up post), and you’re doing more detoxing now than on a normal day. Cut yourself some slack and take a nap or sleep in an extra hour as your body chips away at your toxic burden during your detox. You have a detoxified body and a renewed sense of vigor to look forward to.

Additional factors include:
- less caffeine in your daily detox routine
- less sugar
- less water

The bottom line👇

Ultimately, if you’re feeling sleepy during your first few days of detox, there’s no reason to worry. In fact, some fatigue is even expected. We’ve even heard some people refer to the first week of detox as a “detox flu” because of those feelings of fatigue or tiredness. You’ve made a lot of changes, and your body is busy at work targeting, neutralizing, and eliminating toxins. Be gracious to yourself, take it easy, and focus your energy on supporting your body with nutrition, hydration, and rest.🔑

💡Detoxification — or detox — is a popular buzzword.

It typically implies following a specific diet or using special products that claim to rid your body of toxins, thereby improving health and promoting weight loss.

Your body is actually well equipped to eliminate toxins and doesn’t require special diets or expensive supplements to do so.

That said, you can enhance your body’s natural detoxification system.

💭 3 Easy ways to enhance your natural detoxification system:

1. Limit alcohol:
▪️ Your liver metabolizes more than 90% of the alcohol you consume
◾️ Limiting or abstaining entirely from alcohol is one of the best ways to keep your body’s detoxification system running strong.

2. Focus on sleep:
▪️ Ensuring adequate quality sleep each night is a must to support your body’s health and natural detoxification system.Sleeping allows your brain to reorganize and recharge itself, as well as remove toxic waste byproducts that accumulate throughout the day.
◾️ One of those waste products is a protein called beta-amyloid, which contributes to the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
▪️ Poor sleep has links to short- and long-term health consequences, such as stress, anxiety, high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.

3. Drink more water:
◾️ Water does so much more than quench your thirst. It regulates your body temperature, lubricates joints, aids digestion and nutrient absorption, and detoxifies your body by removing waste products.
▪️ Your body’s cells must continuously repair themselves to function optimally and break down nutrients for your body to use as energy. However, these processes release wastes in the form of urea and carbon dioxide, which can cause harm if they build up in your blood.
▪️ Water transports these waste products, efficiently removing them through urination, breathing, or sweating. So staying properly hydrated is important for detoxification.

In the next post we will look at detoxification and the link it has to your energy levels and adrenal fatigue.

EATING YOUR WAY TO GUT HEALTH 💡💭

Here are foods that will help build your gut microbiome to improve your health from the inside out.

So how do you improve your own microbiome?

Eat more: Probiotics, prebiotics, fiber, polyphenols and fermented foods

🔑 Probiotics
They are beneficial bacteria and can be found in fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, miso and yogurt. Eating foods that are naturally rich in probiotics adds good bacteria to your gut. The most common types of good bacteria are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, with each having its own specific strains. In addition to helping balance your gut bacteria and prevent chronic disease, probiotics can help if you have diarrhea, boost your immunity and keep your heart and skin healthy.

🔑 Kimchi

Kimchi, also fermented cabbage, is the spicy Korean cousin to sauerkraut. It can have scallions, radishes and shrimp added to give it more flavor. Look for it in the refrigerated section near sauerkraut, other Asian sauces and pickles.

🔑 Kefir

Kefir is like drinkable yogurt. It's made when kefir grains, which are colonies of yeast and lactic acid bacteria, ferment the sugars in milk, giving it a slightly thicker consistency and tart flavor. Similar to yogurt, kefir is packed with probiotics.

🔑 Kombucha

Kombucha is a tart, fizzy tea made by adding a SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast) and sugar to green or black tea. It's then fermented for a week or more. During fermentation alcohol and gases are produced, giving the kombucha natural carbonation

🔑 Yogurt

Yogurt is probably the most popular probiotic and for good reason. It's made when good bacteria are added to milk, where they metabolize lactose to form lactic acid and other beneficial microbes. Look for yogurt labeled with the "Live & Active Cultures" seal, which guarantees 100 million probiotic cultures per gram at the time it was manufactured

🔑

Some last tips:

Eat less: Artificial sweeteners, red meat, processed foods and alcohol.

THE SIGNS OF POOR GUT HEALTH ☝️

It is estimated that 60-70 million Americans suffer from digestive problems, making up 12% of inpatient procedures, so poor gut health is a very common problem. Upsets to gut health can occur for a number of reasons, but the main signs that you might have a problem are:

◾️Bloating
◼️Loose stools
◼️Constipation
◼️Heartburn
◼️Nausea and vomiting

Other, slightly more obscure symptoms may not seem like they have much to do with gut health, but can actually be strong indicators that something is wrong.

💡 Fatigue and poor sleep- a 2020 study found that an imbalance in our gut health can lead to disturbed sleep patterns and low energy.

💡 Skin irritation - it seems strange that your external immune barrier (skin) and internal immune barrier (gut) would be linked, but research indicates that skin irritation can be a symptom of poor gut health.

💡 Bad breath/halitosis - it makes sense that symptoms of bad gut health would affect the mouth, as this is the gateway to the gastrointestinal tract, but you may not realise that bad breath can actually be a symptom that all is not well in the rest of the digestive system.

Dean recommends looking out for changes and symptoms that are abnormal for you, as gut health is very personal. “Changes in bowel habit can be a sign that something is wrong, such as increased bloating, gas, diarrhoea, heartburn or waking in the night to pass a stool,” she says. “Sleep disturbances, increased fatigue, skin irritation, food intolerances and unintentional weight changes can all be linked to an unhealthy gut.”

If you think you are experiencing any of the symptoms, it might be worth visiting your doctor or a gut health specialist to discuss potential causes and treatments.
