12 -20 October 2002 is World Bone and Joint Week.

Your shoulders, knee, hips and facet joints of your spine are but a few of the examples of synovial joints you have in your body. All synovial joints have two bones that come together. The ends of the bones are covered by cartilage. This articulation is surrounded by a joint capsule and inside there is a thick, slimy synovial fluid. Your synovial joint does not have a blood vessel network inside to supply good nutrients and remove the waste.

So here is how it works. The cartilage is a lot like a sponge and it absorbs some of the synovial fluid. When you move your joint the synovial fluid is squeezed out of the cartilage like you would press water out of a sponge. This nutrient-depleted synovial fluid needs to come into contact with the inner layer of your joint capsule so that it can exchange the waste for good nutrients and oxygen from the generous blood supply surrounding the outside of the joint capsule. So keep moving your joints to make sure the enriched synovial fluid is moved around inside the joint and reaches the cartilage so that the cartilage can absorb the fluid and receive nutrients and oxygen.

There is a growing amount of research connecting two common aging diseases - Type II diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. One of the links between these two disease is insulin resistance and the effect thereof in the brain.

Research done by Wang et al. in 2013 the incidence of AD was found to be 1.45 times higher in diabetics compared to non-diabetics. 2004 Arvanitakis and co-workers showed a 65% increase in the risk of development of AD in patients with diabetes.

September is Muscular Dystrophy Month.

Muscular dystrophies are a group of inherited, incurable conditions that cause muscles to progressively weaken. The damage and weakness are due to the lack of a protein called dystrophin, which is necessary for typical muscle function.

Two most well known are Duchenne and Becker Muscular Dystrophy.

Early and long-term corticosteroid treatment benefits have shown to slow disease progression and reduce disease complications.

There is a lack of a clear answer regarding the benefit of exercise for individuals diagnosed with MD.

'Front loading' may have a negative impact on your posture that may lead to back and neck pain.

Being overweight can influence your posture. The additional weight especially around the midriff places strain on your lumbar spine causing an anterior tilted hips and an excessive lordosis of the lower back.

The same principle applies to pregnant women. It’s the expanding belly to accommodate for the growing baby that wrecks havoc and causes back and neck pain.

Large breasts also increase the 'front load', but tend to have a larger impact on the posture of the thoracic spine. The heavier load combined with weak muscles may contribute to a kyphosis.

If you seem to have back and neck pain that can be attributed to any of these causes we can help you improve your posture.
