Many women with endometriosis are later found to also have adenomyosis, a related condition where endometrial-like tissue grows within the muscle wall of the uterus.

Together, they can contribute to heavy or painful periods, an enlarged tender uterus, implantation difficulties during IVF, and a higher risk of early pregnancy loss. Adenomyosis is often missed on routine ultrasound and may require specialist imaging.

One remarkable discovery in endometriosis research is that the lesions aren’t passive. They contain aromatase, an enzyme that lets them produce oestrogen locally.

This means endo can fuel its own growth, even when overall oestrogen levels are low, helping explain why symptoms can persist and why hormonal treatments don’t always work as expected.

Because of this self-sustaining ability, research into therapies that block local oestrogen production is a promising area of study.
