Why is First Aid Important? 🚨

First Aid knowledge is invaluable for both you as the individual and for your community. It enables you to assist persons who become injured in the event of an accident or emergency situation until help arrives.

First Aid skills can be applied in the home, the workplace or in public locations, therefore the more First Aid certified people there are in a community the safer that community becomes.

As nurses, we only want what's best for our patients. We want them to get better and ❤️ feel more comfortable. We want our elders to still live a good quality of life through their remaining years on 🌎 earth.

While caring for people may be our biggest motivation, nursing is also a career and like most people, we want to be the best at what we do.

Most wounds can be treated at home with routine first aid including thorough washing and dressing to prevent infection. Seek medical care for wounds if:

The wound is due to significant force or trauma and other injures are be present. Bleeding cannot be stopped even with persistent pressure and elevation. There is concern that wound requires repair with sutures (stitches).

The size and location of the wound are important considerations. Most facial wounds may need to be repaired for cosmetic reasons, especially if they involve the lip or eye. The wound is caused by an animal bite. There is also a need to consider rabies immunizations, if appropriate.

The wound is very dirty and cannot be easily cleaned. There is evidence of infection including redness, swelling, increased pain, and pus at the wound. Tetanus immunizations are not up to date, then a booster is needed within 48 hours. If the patient has never been immunized, the initial tetanus prevention with immunoglobulin should be given immediately.

These basic guidelines can help you care for minor cuts and scrapes:

1. Wash your hands: This helps avoid infection.

2. Stop the bleeding: Minor cuts and scrapes usually stop bleeding on their own. If needed, apply gentle pressure with a clean bandage or cloth and elevate the wound until bleeding stops.

3. Clean the wound: Rinse the wound with water. Keeping the wound under running tap water will reduce the risk of infection. Wash around the wound with soap. But don't get soap in the wound. And don't use hydrogen peroxide or iodine, which can be irritating. Remove any dirt or debris with a tweezers cleaned with alcohol. Visit our surgery if you can't remove all debris.

4. Apply an antibiotic: Apply a thin layer of an antibiotic ointment or to keep the surface moist and help prevent scarring. Certain ingredients in some ointments can cause a mild rash in some people. If a rash appears, stop using the ointment.

5. Cover the wound: Apply a bandage, rolled gauze or gauze held in place with paper tape. Covering the wound keeps it clean. If the injury is just a minor scrape or scratch, leave it uncovered.

6. Change the dressing: Do this at least once a day or whenever the bandage becomes wet or dirty.

Watch for signs of infection. See a doctor if you see signs of infection on the skin or near the wound, such as redness, increasing pain, drainage, warmth or swelling.

This year, the theme of World TB Day is ‘Invest to End TB. Save Lives’. It emphasises the critical need to invest resources to combat Tuberculosis and meet global leaders’ vows to end it. This is especially significant in light of the COVID-19 epidemic, which has jeopardised the TB progress, as well as to provide equal access to prevention and treatment in line with WHO’s mission towards Universal Health Coverage.
