The likelihood of developing eczema is estimated to be 1 in 10, with onset typically occurring in early childhood. Children with atopic dermatitis have a six times greater risk of developing food allergies. They are more likely to be diagnosed with asthma, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other behavioural disorders.

Hear the term Radical Self-Care yet?
“The assertion that you have the responsibility to take care of yourself first before attempting to take care of others”.
It’s no secret that South Africans have become more health-conscious, especially after the year we’ve had.
While the topic of personal wellness was a big one pre-pandemic, it grew stronger once COVID-19 hit. And whether you’ve started exercising more or are finally taking your vitamins, conversations around wellbeing have become more common.
So, in essence, “radical-self-care” goes far beyond scented candles and bubble baths, alluding to doing what you truly need to do to protect yourself and your own mental health before exerting energy on others.
This concept that has seen us embracing practices that keep us physically and psychologically healthy and fit, making time to reflect on what matters to us and challenging ourselves to grow.
I fully embrace this idea of “self-care” but have found in practice that people are still reluctant to invest in their health, may it be from a simple sinus infection to more serious medical pathology.
Remember: Your health is your most important asset.
Furthermore, I have also seen some mis-guided decision making where advertising of certain health products leads us down the wrong path and you end up buying vitamins/supplements that are virtually useless. Always remember that these people’s intentions are not aimed at optimal health but rather on what profits can be made.
At my practice I will most certainly be able to assist you and evaluate your supplement efficacy and also highlight the most important things to look out for when you purchase vitamins and supplements. I will also address any health concearns in a pro-active manner.
“Prevention is always better than cure”
Feel free to reply to this e-mail and book your consultation so we can discuss the most cost-effective way for you to ensure “radical-self-care”

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to spread, the need to understand which populations are most at risk of developing severe disease or dying from Covid-19 grows ever more critical. Recent studies have found an association between vitamin D and Covid-19 severity and mortality. Vitamin D may protect from viral infection and ameliorate the symptoms of Covid-19, including the cytokine storm.

One of the recent vitamin D studies demonstrated that in 20 European countries, an association exists between low levels of vitamin D and higher numbers of Covid-19 cases and mortality. Vitamin D levels are found to be severely low for the older population in these countries, especially in Spain, Italy, and Switzerland. As these are some of the more vulnerable populations to developing Covid-19, this might play an important role in vulnerability to the disease.

Another recent Indonesian retrospective cohort study of 780 Covid-19 patients indicated that the majority of death cases had below-normal vitamin D levels and that vitamin D status was strongly associated with Covid-19 mortality.

Vitamin D has a known effect on the immune system, as previous studies have found an association between susceptibility to respiratory tract infections and low vitamin D levels. Vitamin D levels being low have been associated with numerous factors including older age, less sun in the winter, darker skin pigmentation, exposure to less sunlight, and diet. Diets rich in vitamin D, such as those that include fatty fish, orange juice, cheese, and eggs yolks, can help prevent vitamin D deficiency, along with supplementing vitamin D.

Higher vitamin D levels are found in northern Europe due to a diet heavy in cod liver oil and a higher amount of vitamin D supplements. Scandinavian nations have lower numbers of Covid-19 cases compared to the rest of Europe. Italy is one of the worst affected European countries, and has very high levels of vitamin D deficiency, especially in the elderly. Increased pigmentation results in reduced vitamin D production via sun exposure. Individuals in institutions, such as hospitals and care homes, are more likely to be severely deficient in vitamin D due to lack of sun exposure or diet.

Vitamin D plays a role in the functioning of the immune system and modulates white blood cells by preventing them from releasing too many inflammatory cytokines. This could help lessen the Covid-19-induced cytokine storm. Vitamin D also helps to reduce lung injury and reduces the risk of acute respiratory tract infections.

Because about 40% of the US population is vitamin D deficient, understanding the role vitamin D plays in Covid-19 immune response could help reduce the mortality of the disease.

NEWSLETTER: VIRAL INFECTIONS
Dr. JOHN-JOHN LOTTERING
VIRAL INFECTIONS /COVID-19 AND THE BASICS:
As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to cripple the economy, and we are not sure of how this will play out eventually. We do know that our day to day routines have changed and these changes from face masks to sanitizing regularly is here to stay. At this stage I think it is the “New Normal”.

“TRUSTING YOUR OWN BODY TO ENSURE YOUR OPTIMAL HEALTH IS KEY”

1. Eat Nutritious foods
2. Exercise regularly
3. Manage stress as far as possible
4. Do not “bankrupt” yourself by buying ineffective expensive medication

In Practice I have been asked on several occasions what will be the best and most cost- effective means in ensuring that we all stay healthy and disease free especially now with the flu-season and Covid-19 are basically unopposed. Below are some of the considerations and questions you should keep in mind.

Is it true that we all will contract a viral infection?
Without hesitation an absolute “YES”.
What will make you recover quicker without experiencing major symptoms?
What can you use to ensure optimal immunity?
Can you “trust” your own body to resolve a viral infection?
Do you fall within a high-risk group as a result of some underlying pathology?
Do not Compromise your Immunity – Focussed Supplementation
From an extremely basic regime to the more intense treatment regime during this winter.
