Free Cervical Screening Campaign in collaboration with SA Path, Lancet, Zoie Health and Lenmed.

Often women miss the opportunity to get screened for cervical cancer; This includes pap smear and HPV screening.
Often, women avoid this very important screening due to either previous painful experiences or from what they hear from others.

This often leads to many women missing out on early detection of pre-cancerous lesions.

For some women, access is often the limiting factor.

This is why we are once again bringing you a free cervical screening campaign. The idea is to avail services to those who need it and to promote awareness around this.

The campaign will be from 12-15 August
- Zamokhule Hospital (Tuesday and Thursday)
- Raslouw Wellness Centre (Wednesday and Friday)

Contact pinnacle health ObGyn to schedule your appointment and take control of your health. We're here to support you every step of the way.

Can I get pregnant with fibroids? The answer is yes, you can. The challenge with falling pregnant with fibroids depends on the location and size of the fibroids. Larger fibroids and those that are close to or even growing into the endometrium may make falling pregnant difficult. They also carry risks with pregnancy such as pregnancy loss, preterm labour and massive bleeding following delivery.

Fibroids may grow in pregnancy with the most growth occurring in the first trimester. We however cannot predict by how much they grow as in some instances the fibroids do not grow at all. When fibroids are very large, they may cause pain which may be mild, moderate or severe. Pain management becomes a very important part in these patients.

Fibroids are usually not removed in pregnancy or at the time of a cesarean section due to risks of massive bleeding.

If you have fibroids and are pregnant or plan on getting pregnant, speak to your gynae about your options and the impact of the fibroids you have.

July is Fibroid Awareness Month, an initiative created to draw attention to uterine fibroids, a condition that creates challenges for millions of women around the world. As we start off the month we want everyone to know what fibroids are and not to ignore any signs or chances of having them.

Fibroids are non cancerous tumors or growths within the uterine muscles. The usual symptoms include heavy periods, severe period pains, lower abdominal pains, irregular me**es, infertility, heaviness in the pelvis and urinary symptoms.

Symptoms vary according to size and location of the fibroids. Something to note, these symptoms are not exclusive of fibroids. Other disease processes may present similarly. Fibroids vary in sizes from being as small as a seed to being as large as a soccer ball (or even larger). They may also occur in numbers with mutliple fibroids growing instead of just one or two.

Everyday, every month should be a day to spread awareness to one another. Do not ignore any unusual signs.

Ok, quick one on emergency contraceptives. Most people know the morning after pill but a few other options are available although they have their limitations.
One thing to take note of is none of these are a 100% effective.

What most people know is the morning after pill which is readily available over the counter at most pharmacies. Best results are when taken within the first 72 hours after unprotected s*x and prior to ovulation. There's about a 1.7-2.6 risk of failure which becomes even higher with obesity.

The copper IUCD (what most people call the loop) is a very effective emergency contraceptives. With only a 0.1 chance of failing. Also one's weight does not affect its effectiveness. Only challenge(which is not a big one) is that you'll need a trained health care provider to insert it. It's also inexpensive. This can be done within 5 days following unprotected s*x. best thing about this is you can then keep it for a few years until you're ready for pregnancy. Another option is using the oral contraceptive pill but there are specific concentrations that need to be met and they'll need a prescription also. Better to take the known morning after pill but this may be used when it's not available. There's a higher risk of pregnancy though.

There's a drug called ulipristal acetate. It should be available in SA. It also needs a prescription but availability may be limited. It can be given within the first 5 days following unprotected s*x.

The best thing is to use reliable contraceptives on a regular. There are different available options.

25/06/2025

A caesarean section, also known as a C-section, is a surgical procedure performed by a doctor to deliver a baby through the mother's abdomen and uterus. There are various reasons why a doctor may recommend a C-section, including

1. Complications during pregnancy: If the mother has a high-risk pregnancy or medical conditions that can put her or the baby's health at risk, the doctor may recommend a C-section to avoid complications during childbirth.

2. Foetal distress: If the baby's heart rate drops during labor, it may indicate that the baby is in distress and not getting enough oxygen. In such cases, a C-section may be necessary to deliver the baby quickly.

3. Multiple pregnancies: If the mother is carrying twins, triplets, or more, a C-section may be recommended to reduce the risk of complications during delivery.

4. Previous C-section: If the mother has had a previous C-section, the doctor may recommend another C-section to avoid the risk of a uterine rupture during vaginal delivery.

5. Other factors: In some cases, a C-section may be recommended for other reasons, such as a large baby, a breech presentation, or a placenta blocking the cervix.

It is important to note that a C-section is a major surgical procedure and is not without risks. Therefore, it should only be performed when necessary and after careful consideration of the potential risks and benefits for both the mother and the baby
