A peak into my toolbox of therapy goodies! Let’s chat about assistive devices.

An assistive device is any product that is used to improve your independence in an activity or make that activity easier for you.

This can include something like grab rails, a toilet seat raiser, a sock aid, a jar opener, a mobility aid, magnifiers for low vision, non slip mats and the list goes on!

Assistive devices can also be electronic such as adapted keyboards and computer mouses, cellphone apps or accessibility settings on your cellphone.

As an OT I can determine if there is a need for an assistive device, make recommendations, assist in procuring the device and provide training.

Occupational therapy treatment uses functional activities to improve body functions and to improve independence in that task.

For example, a treatment session of making and flipping pancakes can be used to improve active wrist movements and grasp strength as well as improving independence in food preparation.

There is space in OT for targeted, repetitive activities that work on a specific aspect. Here is a glimpse of some of the hand function activities I keep on hand (🤙🏻😜).

These include
- pegboards of different sizes
- blocks of different materials and sizes
- various locks and keys
- nuts and bolts
- pegs of different sizes
- theraputty
- playing cards
- bean bags
- various small items and various tweezers and tongs

Let's demystify Occupational Therapy 🤩

The first set of "tools in my toolkit" as a mobile therapist happen to be in a literal toolkit. 😝 Here is a brief overview of the process.

- We'll start with an interview and paper based screening tests such as the MOCA for cognition, Bartel Index for functional independence and Berg Balance Scale.

- After taking vitals to establish a baseline I will do a hands on physical assessment. Measuring strength, balance, joint range, hand function, co-ordination and more.

- If appropriate I will then assess cognition and perception.This is done through a series of functional, known and novel tasks.

Assessment usually takes 1 - 2 hours.

We've identified the areas with impairments and have made an action plan. Now we start treatment!

Assessing your home environment for possible risks is so important in preventing falls.

Objective measures are used to identify possible risks and a plan is put in place to eliminate them! This can include:

- Improving your balance, mobility and strength
- Recommending specific assistive devices and tools such as grab rails and non slip mats
- Education on fall recovery and safety measures such as easy access to a phone and floor transfers

A fall at home can be a major set back following discharge from hospital. Occupational therapy can help prevent this.

You should not be experiencing pain or discomfort when sitting in your wheelchair. If you are - consider seeing an OT trained in wheelchair seating. Small adjustments on your wheelchair can make an immediate difference.

I have intermediate level professional wheelchair seating training and more than 7 years hands on experience. Working in the public sector taught me how to make low cost adaptations when purchasing a new wheelchair wasn’t an option.

Don’t settle for being uncomfortable, life is too short.
