When we eat, the food is broken down into glucose (sugar), which enters the bloodstream. The pancreas makes insulin, a hormone that enables the glucose to move from the bloodstream into the body's cells. Once inside the cells, this glucose is converted into energy that the body needs to function.
But if someone has Type 1 diabetes, the body cannot produce insulin or produces an insufficient amount of insulin. Without insulin, the glucose from the food can't get into the body's cells but builds up in the bloodstream.
Devices like Continuous Glucose Monitors and Insulin pumps are helping those with diabetes Type 1 achieve a better glucose control. Sometimes, they are also recommended to those with Type 2 who need insulin in conjunction with their oral medications.
For us as podiatrists, this matters because controlled or stable glucose levels mean fewer risks of foot-related complications.
Remember to speak to your diabetologist or endocrinologist to find out if this is suitable for you.
