What is Charcot Foot?
Charcot Foot is a serious and often overlooked complication that can affect people living with peripheral neuropathy, most commonly those with diabetes. Peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage in the legs and feet, which leads to reduced or complete loss of sensation.
Because of this loss of feeling, injuries or fractures in the foot may go unnoticed. Over time, the bones in the foot and ankle can become weak, fragile, and even break. The joints may then collapse, leading to a progressive deformity of the foot.
This deformity changes the way pressure is distributed when you walk, which can cause skin breakdown, ulcers (open wounds), and increase the risk of severe infections. If untreated, Charcot Foot can unfortunately progress to a point where amputation becomes the only option.
The key is early diagnosis and treatment!
With prompt podiatry care, immobilisation, and offloading, the progression of Charcot Foot can be prevented, thus reducing the risk of amputations.
