28 September is the annual day of action in support of the right to safe abortion. International Safe Abortion Day was first celebrated after the decriminalisation of abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean in 1990.

In South Africa, abortion was legal only under very limiting circumstances until 1 February 1997, when the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act (Act 92 of 1996) came into force after which a woman of any age was granted the right to access a safe and legal abortion on request with no reasons given.
