We are excited to witness the launch of the WHO Global Hepatitis Report 2026 here at the World Hepatitis Summit.

This report provides a consolidated global estimates on viral hepatitis, highlighting both the progress made and the urgent gaps that remain as we strive for 2030 elimination goals.

The data is a sobering reminder of why our work at Sediba Hope Medical Centre is so vital:
* An estimated 14 million people worldwide inject drugs—approximately 0.3% of the global population aged 15–64.
* While only 0.6% of the general population lives with HCV, an estimated 39% of people who inject drugs are living with the infection.
* The risk of HCV infection through shared needles is 5–10 times higher than the risk for HIV.
* Globally, only 18 per 100 people who inject drugs access to opioid agonist maintenance therapy.

At Sediba Hope Medical Centre, we are committed to turning these global insights into local action through our integrated approach for those most affected.

We are honored to play our part as a contributor to the South African Community Epidemiology Network on Drug Use (SACENDU) facilitated by the South African Medical Research Council. By providing consistent, biannual data on drug use trends and treatment demand, we help ensure that both local and international policies—like these new WHO guidelines—are grounded in the real-world experiences of our communities.

SAMRC contributes to WHO guidelines on the treatment of opioid dependence and the community management of opioid overdose. The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced updated recommendations for its forthcoming guidelines on the treatment of opioid dependence and the community management of opioid overdose, responding to the substantial global burden of opioid-related morbidity and mortality. The South African Medical Research Council, through its Mental health, Alcohol, Substance use and To***co Research Unit (MASTRU), played a key role in the development of these guidelines as the guidelines m**hodologist responsible for ensuring the scientific rigour of the m**hods used to formulate these new guidelines.

Understanding the science behind substance use is essential for creating an environment of empathy and effective care.

This article sheds light on the complexities of addiction and why a health-centered approach is vital for long-term recovery.

In Westbury, Johannesburg, Bridget Munnik — known as Auntie Brie — has watched drugs shape her community for generations. Her brothers used Mandrax. Her sons struggled with crystal m**h. "I saw the monsters, where they became very aggressive."

Today it’s known as one of Johannesburg's deadliest areas, plagued by gangs, violence and poverty. And experts say what's fuelling the crisis is that South Africa's own drug policies are fighting each other.

The National Drug Master Plan says addiction is a chronic disease. Police follow a law that says it's a crime. The result? Communities remain trapped while proven harm reduction programmes — like m**hadone treatment and needle exchanges — remain scarce.

Read more about South Africa's contradictory war on drugs — and what communities like Westbury need to break the cycle.
