Sr Megan 's Well Baby Clinic

Sr Megan 's Well Baby Clinic I’m a registered nurse and midwife, specialising in maternity, infant, and family health since 1999. I founded Sister Megan’s Well Baby Clinic in 2015.

I help new mothers prepare for birth, breastfeeding, managing government immunisations, baby checks, and childhood illnesses, at home and in the clinic. I qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1999, specialising in maternity care and postnatal health. As a result, I gained extensive experience in both hospital and community settings. It is a nurturing space focused on promoting well baby care and supporting mothers during the postnatal period. I have dedicated my career to providing compassionate, professional care to mothers and their babies. My mission is to ensure every mother feels confident, supported, and empowered throughout her journey into motherhood, while every baby receives the best possible start in life.

🧠 Talking to your baby isn’t just bonding; it actually shapes their brain. A recent study shows that babies and toddlers who hear more words and experience “back-and-forth” conversation from caregivers develop stronger brain pathways linked to language and cognition. Regular talking, singing or playing with your baby today may help them build better language and learning skills for life.

Research shows that babies who hear more words have larger brains and better cognitive skills. Here's how to boost brain development in infants through conversation.

Babies can overheat much faster than adults, so it’s crucial to help them stay cool and comfortable during warm days ☀️

🌿Tips for warm weather:

Dress your baby in light, breathable cotton clothing.
Keep rooms cool and shaded, and avoid direct sunlight.
Offer regular feeds to prevent dehydration.
Use a cool, damp cloth to gently wipe your baby’s skin if they’re flushed.
Avoid covering them with thick blankets during naps.

💡 Signs of overheating include flushed skin, fussiness, or a hot chest when touched.

Babies get the sniffles, mild rashes, and fevers from time to time, and most of the time, it’s nothing serious. But there are moments when a professional check-up is the safest choice🧸

🚨 Seek medical attention if your baby:

Is under 3 months old and has a fever above 38 °C
Refuses to feed or vomits repeatedly
Has breathing difficulty or noisy breathing
Is unusually sleepy or hard to wake
Has fewer wet nappies or signs of dehydration

🌿 Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it’s always okay to get checked. You know your baby best.

Crying is your baby’s main way of communicating, not just a sign that something’s wrong🧸

🌼 Common reasons babies cry:

Hunger or tiredness
Overstimulation or gas
Need for comfort or a cuddle

💡Try these gentle soothing techniques:

Hold your baby close and speak softly.
Offer a feed or dummy.
Rock, sway, or walk while humming.
Try white noise or gentle shushing.

🫶 Remember: responding calmly helps your baby feel secure, and teaches them that their needs will be met with love

Every baby’s timeline is different, but most start teething around 6 months of age (some a little earlier or later).

🌿 Common signs of teething:

Drooling more than usual
Chewing on hands or toys
Irritability or disrupted sleep
Slightly red gums

💡 What can help:

Gently massage gums with a clean finger
Offer a cooled (not frozen) teething ring
Wipe drool often to prevent rash

❗Teething shouldn’t cause a high fever or severe diarrhoea. If that happens, it’s best to have your baby checked.

Remember, teething is temporary, but those new smiles are forever. 💕

A fever can be scary but it’s actually one of your baby’s strongest natural defences 💗

🌿 What counts as a fever?
A temperature above 38°C (measured under the arm) means your baby’s body is fighting an infection.

🔹Common causes: mild viral infections, teething, or recent vaccinations
🔹What to do: keep your baby hydrated, lightly dressed, and monitor temperature
🔹When to seek help: Fever in a baby under 3 months, persistent fever above 39°C, trouble feeding, breathing, or waking

Remember, a fever isn’t always dangerous, but it’s your baby’s way of saying, “I need a little extra care today.” 🌼

Tummy time is more than just cute photos it’s a key part of your baby’s physical development 👶

🌿Benefits of tummy time:

Strengthens neck, shoulder, and back muscles
Prepares your baby for rolling and crawling
Helps prevent flat spots on the head
Encourages sensory exploration and confidence

💡Start with just a few minutes, a few times a day, and always stay close and supervise.

Remember: every minute on the tummy helps your baby grow stronger and more coordinated 🌼

💧Babies can lose fluids quickly, especially in hot weather or when they’re unwell. Knowing the early signs of dehydration can help you act fast and keep your little one safe.

🚼 Common signs to watch for:

Fewer wet nappies than usual
Dry lips or mouth
Sunken soft spot on the head
Unusual sleepiness or irritability
No tears when crying

🌿 What to do:

Offer frequent breastfeeds or small sips of oral rehydration solution if advised.
If symptoms persist or baby looks pretty drowsy, please contact a healthcare professional right away.

Gentle awareness can prevent serious illness, hydration matters more than you think. 💧

Babies can’t use words yet but they communicate constantly!
Learning to read their little signals helps you respond with confidence and calm.

👀 Hunger cues: rooting, sucking on hands, turning head toward touch
💤 Tired cues: rubbing eyes, yawning, staring off, fussing
🧸 Overstimulation: turning head away, arching back, crying suddenly
🫶 Comfort cues: relaxed body, eye contact, soft cooing

🌿The more you notice these cues, the easier it becomes to understand what your baby needs before the tears even start.

🌼 Every baby develops at their own pace, but there are a few general signs that show healthy progress.

👶 2 months: Smiles at familiar faces, follows movement with their eyes
🤲 4 months: Starts reaching for toys, responds to sounds
👣 6 months: Rolls from tummy to back, sits with support
🗣 9–12 months: Babbles more, starts crawling or pulling up

💡 If your baby hasn’t reached a milestone yet, don’t panic, slight differences are completely normal! What matters most is gradual progress and curiosity.

🌿 Encourage development through gentle play, tummy time, talking, and lots of loving interaction.
