The term "Allied Health Professionals" is often inaccurately used to refer to physiotherapists in South Africa, diminishing the autonomy and specialized expertise of the profession. According to the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), physiotherapy is classified under "independent practitioners" within the Professional Board for Physiotherapy, Podiatry, and Biokinetics, rather than an allied health category. This distinction reflects the advanced clinical training and comprehensive scope of practice physiotherapists possess, emphasizing their direct contribution to health care as primary healthcare providers.

In line with HPCSA guidelines, physiotherapists should be recognized and addressed as independent healthcare practitioners, acknowledging their professional status and essential role in patient-centered care.

A stroke is a medical condition in which the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die.

There are two main types of strokes:

Ischemic stroke: This is the most common type of stroke, accounting for about 85% of all strokes. It occurs when a blood clot blocks or narrows an artery leading to the brain.
Hemorrhagic stroke: This type of stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts or ruptures, spilling blood into the brain tissue.

Symptoms of stroke
The symptoms of a stroke can vary depending on the part of the brain that is affected. However, some common symptoms include:

Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
Sudden severe headache with no known cause
