Exercise guidance during & after pregnancy

Nicolien Meyer is skilled and qualified in offering safe and effective exercise guidance during pregnancy. Pregnancy and post-partum rehabilitation is her passion and she is well versed in all things pregnancy and pregnancy recovery. This type of rehabilitation includes but is not limited to pelvic floor rehabilitation and core and abdominal retraining.

2. Pelvic floor rehabilitation and core training/retraining. Breathing and activation techniques are used to regain core control and pelvic floor activation/relaxation. This treatment is offered to most patients but especially to those struggling with chronic back pain, postural deviations, hip pain and for various post surgical interventions.

3. Injury rehabilitation

Acute and chronic injuries such as knee pain, shoulder pain, hip pain, fractures, dislocations etc can all be treated by a Biokineticist. Specific, research based protocols are used to assess the injury and to develop a treatment plan for full and optimal recovery.

4.Post operative rehabilitation

Physical rehabilitation following a surgery is crucial in long-term recovery of the injured part. As with normal injury rehabilitation, a Biokineticist can assist with pre or post operative rehabilitation. Whether the surgery is due to a traumatic injury (such as a motor accident) or from a long overdue surgery (such as a total hip replacement), Biokinetics uses stretching, exercise, mobility and lifestyle modifications to get the patient back to functioning optimally.

5.Sports rehabilitation

Sports injuries such as tennis elbow, concussion, runner's knee, intervertebral disc herniation or spondylolysis can be treated by a Biokineticist. Nicolien Meyer has 5 years experience working with athletes from all sports and has a keen interest in tennis, running and dance.

6.Chronic disease management

Diabetes, Chronic opstruction pulmonary disorders (COPD), heart disease and obesity are some chronic conditions treated at Nicolien Meyer Biokinetics.

7. Neurological rehabilitation

Neuro rehabilitation is a field of study particularly close to Nicolien Meyers heart. This area of rehabilitation includes rehabilitation from stroke, parkinsons and spinal cord injury.

Here is a glimpse into a day in my life as a Bio, practice owner and Mom.

Owning my own practice means being able to spend a half day at work seeing patients and the second half of my day with my boy 🤩 how lucky am I?!

Also, for those who are unsure about what a Bio does: here are my current tuesday patients/sessions and what I am treating them for!

You are pregnant and you want to start exercising for health and for your birth… you have no idea where to start!

Well, here it is!

Simply breathe!!!

This exercise is called HUG-the-BABY. And you are simply using your breath to guide your stomach muscles into a gentle contraction and more importantly; learning how to relax your belly and you pelvic floor.

Step 1 Breathe in: relax belly forward into your hands
Step 2 Breathe out: pull belly towards your spine with your core.

Breathing deeply also helps to
✅activate your relaxation nervous system (parasympatheric nervous system)
✅lenghten the diaphragm
✅connects you to your pelvic floor and learning how to relax down there!
✅interact with your baby!

My husband has been living with a spinal cord injury for 5 years and although I don’t post about it very often, we LIVE it every day of our lives ♿️

This month I will be taking time to spread the word about spinal cord injuries because it’s not just someone in a wheelchair- there is a lot more bubbling under the surface - constant pain, physical limitations, mental health struggles, social impact etc.

A spinal cord injury is a debilitating and all-consuming injury. These individuals (and their families) need the support of their community and loved ones

Here is a basic human movement; the deep squat sit. Babies do it ALL THE TIME- comfortably.

Inability to get into, maintain or come out of this movement may indicate movement pattern insufficiency’s- stiff hips, stiff ankles, weak back or core muscles etc.

Nikki Meyer Biokineticist is a humble practice in Pretoria East.

The focus of this practice is to offer intimate and in depth exercise rehabilitation in a setting that is welcoming, calming and professional. Nikki Meyer Biokineticist aims to establish a unique approach to rehabilitation, focussing on new research, exercise techniques and new developements in the wold of movement so that this will become the signature of the practice.
