Glycolic acid is one of the most well-known and effective AHAs.

The main action is the peeling effect: it acts by improving the removal of dead cells from the skin surface (= breaks the intercellular adhesive that connects them) and stimulates the renewal rate of skin cells.

✨ 💦 Once applied, glycolic acid reacts with the upper layer of the epidermis, weakening the lipid-binding properties that hold dead skin cells together. This allows the outer skin to dissolve, revealing the underlying skin.
This is believed to be due to the reduction of calcium-ion concentration in the epidermis and the removal of calcium-ions from cellular adhesions, which causes decay.
