*Hearing is Only Half the Story*
When we think of World Hearing Day, we often focus solely on what we hear. But hearing healthcare is more complex—it's about the delicate synergy between the auditory and the vestibular system.
Because the anatomy of hearing and balance are so closely linked, a challenge in one often indicates a risk in the other. This is especially critical in pediatric care, where early detection of vestibular issues can be the difference between a child meeting their milestones or facing avoidable developmental delays.
From managing vestibular migraines—the leading pediatric dizziness pathology—to identifying the high risk of vestibular dysfunction in children with bilateral hearing loss, our focus remains on the whole child. Comprehensive cochlear implant candidacy evaluations must include vestibular testing to select the appropriate ear to implant and guide post-surgical outcomes and rehabilitation.
We monitor development and motor skills, but need to be cognisant and refer for further management.
Balance is the silent partner of hearing. This World Hearing Day, we are also advocating for comprehensive care that looks at the whole picture. Let’s ensure our children are not just hearing the world, but standing steady in it.
