L-carnitine is an amino acid (building blocks of protein) that your liver, kidneys, and brain generate from two other amino acidsโlysine and methionine. It has two main roles in the body:
1. Helping to convert fats into energy
2. Removing toxic compounds from cells.
Although popular claims state that L-carnitine supplements help with weight loss and athletic performance, research doesnโt fully support these claims. However, studies have shown some promise in L-carnitine's ability to help with brain, reproductive, and cardiovascular health. Further research is however warranted to make a significant conclusion.

Research has found that L-carnitine may support various aspects of brain health. These include slowing cognitive decline associated with dementia and Alzheimerโs disease.
Some studies have also found that L-carnitine was more effective than a placebo for treating depression.

Carnitine plays an important role in supporting cardiovascular health.
A meta-analysis showed that L-carnitine significantly reduced the rate of mortality, ventricular arrhythmias, and new-onset angina, regardless of the dose or duration of L-carnitine supplementation.
In addition, L-carnitine supplementation has also been shown to reduce cholesterol levels, particularly total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol, while increasing HDL (good) cholesterol.

Some studies have found promising benefits of L-carnitine supplementation on markers of type 2 diabetes. These include significantly improved fasting blood glucose, HbA1C, and HOMA index - a marker of insulin resistance. This was particularly true for doses at or above 2g per day for at least 12 weeks.

L-carnitine supplementation may also improve fertility, particularly for males and people with polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS).
A meta-analysis of studies involving about 200 men struggling with infertility found that 1โ3 g/day of L-carnitine supplementation for two to six months improved s***m motility and morphology (the size and shape of s***m).
One study of 280 women with PCOS found that participants who took 3 g of L-carnitine in addition to metformin and the fertility drug clomiphene-citrate had higher ovulation and pregnancy rates than the women who took the two medications without L-carnitine.
