Chronic wounds or hard-to-heal wounds are not indigenous in Africa, itβs a worldwide phenomenon. The management of these wounds are often very difficult since they co-exist with other co-morbidities or factors influencing wound healing such as diabetes, vascular problems, cancer and many others. If the chronic or hard-to-heal wound is not timeously treated or managed, this may lead to several complications such as infection, necrosis and even amputations if not properly managed.
Research has shown that chronic or hard-to-heal wounds are often misdiagnosed and therefor also mismanaged. In order to manage wounds correctly a thorough holistic assessment is needed; which should include patient and family history, wound history, current problems and physical assessment. This should also include identifying the cause of the wound as well as the patient centred concerns. Wound care is a team effort and it is important to include all contributing members of which the patient is the centre of the team.
