24 – 30 April 2026 is African Vaccination Week. This year’s theme is “For every generation, vaccines work”.
As we mark African Vaccination Week, we are reminded that immunisation is not just a personal choice but a public health responsibility.
Every vaccine given is more than an injection; it is a step towards a healthier future.
Across Africa, immunisation helps children grow up stronger, attend school regularly, and avoid diseases that can limit their potential. From measles and polio to Human papillomavirus (HPV) and influenza, vaccines strengthen both individual immunity and community protection.
Vaccines remain one of the most useful tools in modern healthcare, protecting millions of lives every year and preventing the spread of life-threatening diseases. Reaching herd immunity eradicates the threat of these diseases.
Immunisation saves lives, reduces outbreaks, and gives every child the chance to grow, learn, and thrive, especially in poverty-stricken areas throughout the African continent.
You can get vaccinated at a local clinic, pharmacy, or by your doctor. Many pharmacies provide immunisation services.
Check with your local pharmacy for screening and immunisation services they offer.

Happy Freedom Day, South Africa.

Theme: Freedom and the Rule of Law – 30 Years of Democratic Citizenship.

Today, we commemorate three decades of freedom and democracy, honouring the courage, resilience, and unity of those who paved the way for a just and inclusive society. This milestone invites us not only to reflect on how far we have come, but also to recognise the enduring importance of the rule of law in safeguarding our rights, dignity, and democratic values.

As we mark this significant occasion, we reaffirm our collective responsibility to uphold these principles and to contribute meaningfully towards a healthier, more equitable, and stronger South Africa for all.

Proudly South African. Always. 💙💛💚❤️

Today is . The theme for 2026 is “Caring for Our Voices”. Your voice is more than just sound, it’s how you express yourself, connect with others, and communicate your health needs. This World Voice Day, we highlight the importance of protecting and caring for your voice.

Taking care of your voice starts with simple daily habits:
✔ Staying hydrated
✔ Avoiding excessive shouting or whispering
✔ Resting your voice when strained
✔ Limiting smoking and exposure to irritants

Risk factors for voice problems

• Smoking (also the main risk factor for laryngeal carcinoma).
• Excess alcohol consumption.
• Gastro-oesophageal reflux.
• Professional voice uses e.g., teachers, actors and singers.
• Environment: poor acoustics, atmospheric irritants and low humidity.
• Type 2 diabetes (neuropathy, poor glycaemic control).

Healthcare providers often advise that when hoarseness lasts longer than two (2) weeks or has no obvious cause, it should be evaluated by an Otolaryngologist – head and neck surgeon (ENT, ear, nose and throat doctor), speech/language pathologists, and teachers of singing, acting, or public speaking.

Healthcare professionals, like pharmacists or pharmacy support personnel, can also guide you in managing minor throat conditions and recommend appropriate care.

A short vocal warm-up improves the quality of the sounds you make and helps prevent vocal injury, keeping you in good voice and making your voice production feel better.
