Such an interesting presentation last night by Angela Buck of . Angela is a physiotherapist and CranioSacralFascial Therapist in the Western Cape. Angela and I trained Gillespie Approach - Craniosacral Fascial Therapy at the same time and she has gone on to specialise in BreastFeeding and understanding Tongue Ties.

We learnt about different and ancient treatments for tongue ties (midwives and their sharp nails 🤯😳)

We looked at the Fascial connections from the Tongue way down to the toes and how a tongue tie can present as restrictions all thee way through the body.

We looked at Mouth Breathing, Poor latching, Speech Development and crawling and how it is all inter-connected.
We spoke about Tight Jaws and Teeth grinding and how that affects teenagers and adults throughout life.

This subject is trending on social media a fair bit, with the usual conflicting views. Angela said there has been some push back in the Cape, but she has been invited to speak with a group of paediatricians, to enhance understanding and collaboration - that's AMAZING!

The presentation was kindly hosted by Sonia Hawkins of RMTi - Rhythmic Movement Training International

So many good people doing good work out there !

Day 15/30 Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Remember how excited we were, when Joy glanced at me and said ‘I’m going in an airplane?’ (She meant the Chamber)

Well, she’s moved on !
Now she regularly speaks 3 word sentences, is able to ask for why she wants (in this case .. to watch Baby Shark on the iPad) and guess what she calls the Chamber now?

(Clue : it’s a FOUR syllable word) 👏🏽👏🏽⭐️⭐️

“He’ll grow out of it” 😳

It’s always interesting to have a look at the angle of the chin, from the head-end. People (adults and children alike) perceive that they are lying straight, And this feels comfortable for them

But in fact there is a pattern of tension in the neck tissue, and the shoulders, and the back fascia is twisted.

If this twist is comfortable, what will the walking pattern look like?
What will it feel like for this body to have to sit still and concentrate, when the whole body has pulls, especially around the neck and shoulders?

It’s not really suprising to find digestive issues and shallow breathing - the stomach is seated below the diaphragm which shows the same tension pattern

By gently unwinding the fascia - in order of priority of the body … finding which area is easy and gentle to free up - we change the Structure of the whole body and all the systems begin to move more naturally

It really doesn’t make sense to wait for these patterns to somehow dissolve and stay in tension until then .. a one of those people who crack their necks to get through the day!

The Sense of Smell is wired to the brain in an interesting way and working with how the baby or child, deals with smell is an important part of the treatment. For parents learning to massage their babies with Baby Massage Pretoria, the sense of smell and use of Smells has a different meaning.

The The Family Hope Center teaches a wonderful programme called "Smells'' and I apply it in treatments everyday (and teach it to parents too). The nerves of the sense of Smell track directly through the Limbic Brain (our emotional brain) and using Smells (chosen carefully and used systematically) has shown amazing results in helping babies and children to regulate their emotions.

Imagine if so-called 'fussy' children are really sensitive children, who could use a little help in getting their brains and body's more organised?
What if there is a simple and practical technique, which you can use several times a day, to help the brain and emotions settle and become more regulated ?

We celebrate unique special intriguing children (and adults) but supporting the ones who struggle is so special. There is no need for sweet and intelligent children to find themselves gagging and struggling around smells that no-one else is noticing . There is no need for children to veer into meltdowns and chaotic behaviour because of overwhelm from the information they are picking up around them.

Becoming aware of the affect of Smells (especially the chemicals all around us, in our homes and clothes and food) is part of navigating a world which seems increasingly tough for children - starting at Birth (and before?)
Becoming aware of how the brain deals with our environment is a valuable tool for supporting children in an increasingly tough world

20 session update !

Hitekani came for 42 Hyperbaric Oxygen sessions - and was very intentional about what he wanted to achieve. The protocol for brain injury is 40 sessions and that is a huge commitment of resources
We had a fascinating time documenting the changes in his body and brain - specifically around involuntary movements which are tiring and disruptive

Exactly one month after his 1st session the movements along his back had subsided substantially- this means he’s moving more comfortably, getting more sleep and is able to eat, write and interact without the interruptions of an ever-moving body

I tried to explain this in every way I can think- pulling on sheets and opening up oranges @ to demonstrate how vast the fascia network is. How it covers and penetrates and holds every part of our body. But sometimes a sweet 10year to explains it better 🙌🏽🩷 Gillespie Approach - Craniosacral Fascial Therapy

In 2023 Rachel was playing with her grandchildren and jumping rope. She hurt her foot and went off to hospital. She was told she had torn her Achilles tendon and had surgery - in fact she was told that part of her Achilles had been removed

Jump forward (pardon the pun) to 2025. And it’s been a journey of conflicting advice and a wound which just would not heal. At some point she was told she would need to have her foot fused, that her Achilles is in fact intact and a multitude of other diagnoses

She’s visited a wound care sister (angel) once a week since 2023 🙌🏽. And then she was referred to a GP in Rayton who specialising in wound repair and he advised her to add Hyperbaric Oxygen to the healing process.

After her first session, she reported 5 hours pain free and a welcome break from the ongoing burning sensation in her foot . After her third session, she went two whole days without any pain. The GP and the wound care sister are delighted with the progress in the wound healing ..

We just hug each other when she comes for her sessions - we can’t wait till she’s out of a bandages and sock and can try a shoe again (but maybe not skipping just yet)

P.S. oom Kobus had accepted he would never breathe deeply again after ending up in hospital with a lung infection. But every time he gets out the Hyperbaric Oxygen chamber he is pink, head to toe and is breathing more deeply every day 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🫁🫁 Oxygen + circulation heals

Is there a reason I have THREE different chairs, of different shapes and sizes, in my treatment room?

Absolutely yes!

Working with babies is dynamic … they are dynamic little beings and they usually need feeding and interaction and changes of position
🪑the high chair is great for a parent holding a teeny baby, and especially for breast-feeding. The baby can lay secure in moms arms, while I can comfortably reach (from the lowerst chair) the lower back, legs and feet without intruding in their space 🙌🏽

🪑 the office chair is usually used by a parent holding a bigger baby- who wants to reach for the wind chimes and check out the plants interact and play. There’s more than enough space for me to reach the skull, the back or lower body without having to bend over which can be hard on the back. The baby feels connected to mom and sage to be treated 🙌🏽

🪑two of the chairs have wheels. I usually start on the lowest chair - it’s at the perfect height for me to assess cranial movement and pressures , without having to lean forward. But if I need to move around to the lower body or around the child and toys and bags , it convenient to just scoot around 🙌🏽

And of course there are multiple variations on these uses , to keep a little one comfortable and at ease and have at least one parent available and participating in every treatment 🙌🏽

I just love the Unintended Consequences of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Laurane comes for regular sessions - she find the deep rest does wonders for her nervous system . She packs her favourite music, knitting and a book and makes occasion of it !

She emerges from the hour session, with renewed energy and positivity.
And she’s loving the unexpected improvement in her digestive system too
