Our VA business is aimed at providing aspiring small-business owners in South Africa or International with the virtual assistance they need to successfully grow their businesses.

In our VA world, generally most people chose to go this route because of flexibility. We became virtual assistants when we came upon the realization that most of the work we did for our previous employers could be done virtually. It didn’t make any sense to sit in a 9-5 and be restricted to what you are “allowed” to do. We knew we were good, reliable workers and could be trusted to complete our work regardless of if we were physically present in an office.

Alas, corporate South Africa does not always view it the same way. Don’t get me wrong – many businesses are offering more and more flexibility with work from home days as part of a package, or at least the option to work from home if there is inclement weather. While it’s a flexible option, we noticed it’s not very, well, “flexible” for lack of a better word.

We are not saying it came easily, but it worked out in the end. We knew we are motivated enough to get work done on our own without anyone breathing down our shoulder but we also wanted the ability to run out the door and go shopping for 4 hours if we wanted to. We wanted to do what we wanted without having to ask anyone for permission. If our kids are sick, we want to take them to the doctor and not worry about having to take time off from work.
