Dr George P. Babiolakis, a senior registrar in Prosthodontics at the University of Pretoria, recently won first place in the Postgraduate Competition at the 54th Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Association for Dental Research – South African Division (IADR-SA).

His research, “Colour stability of injectable composites exposed to dietary staining agents,” stood out among strong national competitors and brought international recognition to UP’s commitment to advancing dental research and innovation.

Dr. Babiolakis will now go on to represent the University of Pretoria and South Africa at the prestigious IADR/AADOCR/CADR General Session & Exhibition internationally in March 2026.

Professor Anri Human, Associate Professor in the Department of Physiotherapy at the University of Pretoria, was honoured with the distinguished Teaching Excellence Laureate Award for her outstanding contribution to teaching and learning. Celebrated for her innovative teaching approaches, academic leadership and impact in paediatric neurorehabilitation, Professor Human continues to elevate excellence in physiotherapy training at UP.

Professor Human holds a BPhysT (cum laude), an MPhysT, and a doctorate, as well as a PGCHE (cum laude). She is responsible for teaching all undergraduate paediatrics modules and providing clinical supervision to third- and fourth-year students during their paediatrics blocks. The University of Pretoria appointed Professor Human in 2022 to design and implement an integrative, comprehensive undergraduate paediatrics programme, with a mandate to expand this specialised focus into the postgraduate curriculum.

Since October 2024, Professor Human has taken on the role of postgraduate coordinator in the Department of Physiotherapy, contributing to the growth and mentorship of emerging researchers. Read more on hsup.co.za

At the University of Pretoria’s Annual Academic Achievers’ Awards, 63 C-rated researchers were celebrated for their sustained excellence and impact, including 10 from the Faculty of Health Sciences. Among them were Dr Rodney Hull, Dr Mankgopo Kgatle, Professor Razia Khammissa, Professor Tivani Mashamba-Thompson, Professor Kgomotso Mokoala, Dr Jabulani Ncayiyana, Professor Nanette Oberholzer, Professor Natalie Schellack, Professor Nombulelo Sepeng, and Professor André Uys, recognised for their groundbreaking research, mentorship, and contributions to advancing healthcare and science.

NRF ratings reflect the quality, impact, and international recognition of South African researchers. At the University of Pretoria’s 25th Annual Academic Achievers’ Awards on 23 October 2025, 18 newly B-rated scholars were honoured, including two from the Faculty of Health Sciences. Professor Wanda Markotter, director of UP’s Centre for Viral Zoonoses, is recognised internationally for her One Health research on emerging infectious diseases and pandemic prevention, while Professor Bernardo Rapoport, extraordinary professor in Immunology, is acclaimed for his work in cancer care, immuno-oncology, and groundbreaking clinical trials. Faculty of Health Sciences researchers were recognised for their outstanding achievements at the University of Pretoria’s 25th Annual Academic Achievers’ Awards, held on 23 October 2025. Among the recipients of the Exceptional Academic Achievers Award was Professor Ericka Noelle L’Abbé, honoured for her significant contributions to forensic anthropology, research, and postgraduate mentorship.

Professor Ericka Noelle L’Abbé is a forensic anthropologist in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where she serves as the director of the Forensic Anthropology Research Centre within the Faculty of Health Sciences.

She earned her bachelor’s and master’s of arts degrees in the United States before completing her doctorate at the University of Pretoria in 2005. She has been a diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology since 2010, and she has consulted on over 375 forensic anthropology cases for the South African Police Service (SAPS) and forensic pathology units across the country.

Professor L’Abbé teaches human osteology, human evolution, and forensic anthropology and mentors postgraduate students. Her research spans forensic anthropology, skeletal biology, taphonomy, and the use of digital technologies in education and research. Read more on hsup.co.za

Faculty of Health Sciences researchers continued to shine at the University of Pretoria’s 25th Annual Academic Achievers’ Awards, held on 23 October 2025. Among the distinguished recipients of the Exceptional Academic Achievers Award was Professor Christa Janse van Rensburg, Head of the Department in the Section of Sports Medicine and newly appointed Director of the Sports, Exercise Medicine, and Lifestyle Institute (SEMLI). Her award recognises her sustained contributions to advancing sports medicine, exercise science, and athlete health on both national and international levels.

Professor Christa Janse van Rensburg is a full professor and the Head of the Department in the Section of Sports Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences.

She is the recently appointed Director of SEMLI (Sports, Exercise Medicine, and Lifestyle Institute). A qualified rheumatologist, she also holds an undergraduate medical degree (MBChB – cm laude), a MSc degree in sports and exercise medicine and a MMed degree in physical medicine (rheumatology – cm laude). Prof Daleen Casteleijn of has transformed the Vona du Toit Model of Creative Ability (VdTMoCA) into an evidence-based, globally relevant tool for clinical practice.
