The Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof Flavia Senkubuge, attended the CUTL Teaching and Learning Symposium at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University yesterday, where she delivered a keynote address titled “Building a Health Sciences Education Architecture: Towards Contextually Relevant and Future-Ready Curricula.”

Her contribution helped shape important conversations on transforming teaching and learning in health sciences education, with a focus on relevance, inclusivity, and innovation.

The symposium programme brought together academics and thought leaders committed to advancing impactful and responsive learning environments in health sciences education

The Faculty of Health Sciences continues to strengthen its global academic footprint, with Dr. Nthuseni Sharon Murudi-Manganye, a lecturer in the Department of Nursing Science, recently appointed as University Coordinator for the 12th International Conference on Public Health (ICOPH 2026).

The conference, set to take place from 5–7 August 2026 in Bali, Indonesia, brings together global leaders, researchers and practitioners in public health to share knowledge, drive innovation and strengthen international collaboration. Dr. Murudi-Manganye’s appointment marks a significant milestone for both the Department of Nursing Science and the University, reflecting growing international recognition of its academic leadership. The Department of Community Dentistry celebrated World Oral Health Day (WOHD) on Thursday, 19 March 2026 at Itumeleng Madiba Primary School in Soshanguve.

New research from the University of Pretoria highlights systemic problems in how medical schemes conduct forensic audits of physiotherapists.

The study by Lesley Meyer, an extra-ordinary lecturer at UP’s Department of Physiotherapy, found that audits frequently operate beyond their intended scope, with limited transparency, weak oversight and practices that practitioners experience as coercive rather than corrective.

The research calls for independent oversight, standardised investigative procedures and appeal mechanisms to ensure procedural fairness while maintaining accountability. Read more on hsup.co.za

Congratulations to Professor Farhanah Suleman on Her Promotion to Associate Professor, Department of Radiology.
Professor Suleman joined the University of Pretoria and Steve Biko Academic Hospital in 2009 as a specialist in Radiology and has since built an exceptional career marked by leadership, academic excellence, and service to the profession. She was appointed Clinical Head of Unit in 2012 and promoted to Adjunct Professor in 2016. In 2019, she took on the role of Head of Clinical Department at Kalafong Hospital, further demonstrating her leadership within the field.

Her academic focus is in musculoskeletal radiology, where she has contributed extensively through research and publications. With over 40 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, Professor Suleman has played a significant role in advancing knowledge within her discipline. She has also been a dedicated research coordinator for the department since 2011.

A committed educator and mentor, she has supervised and co-supervised 22 master’s students to completion, contributing meaningfully to the development of future specialists. Her contribution to academic publishing includes serving as Deputy Editor of the South African Journal of Radiology from 2013 to 2017.

Professor Suleman has also made a lasting impact through her involvement with the College of Radiology, where she has served as a convenor, examiner, and moderator since 2011, and as a council member for more than three terms. In addition, she has been a member of the MMed protocol committee since 2020.

The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria, through its Department of Nursing Science, hosted a digital storytelling screening on 9–10 March 2026 as part of the Mothering and Albinism project. The initiative is co-led by Professor Shirley Mooa, Head of the Department of Nursing Science, in collaboration with Professors Sheryl Reimer-Kirkham and Barb Astle from Trinity Western University, as well as Ikponwosa Ero from the African Albinism Network.

Earlier in the month, from 1–12 March 2026, members of the research team, Dr. Mike Lang and Dr. Kendra Rieger, travelled from Canada to South Africa to collaborate with Prof. Mooa, Innocentia Mgijima and Mpho Tjope. Together, they facilitated a five-day digital storytelling workshop. Read more on hsup.co.za
