Vascular & Hyperbaric Unit, Eugene Marais Hospital Dr. Weir is a registered and certified Vascular Surgeon.

The Vascular & Hyperbaric Unit at the Eugene Marais Hospital offers a unique service to patients with various medical problems, including peripheral arterial disease, problem wounds, diabetic foot ulcers, chronic venous ulcers, etc. He developed an interest in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy after being introduced to the treatment modality by Dr. Frans Cronje in 2004. The interest was further developed when Dr. Weir participated in and completed the Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Staff Training Course in February of 2007. He was given the opportunity to take over the Hyperbaric Unit at the Eugene Marais Hospital at the Eugene Marais Hospital in July 2007. We offer a range of services in the field of hyperbaric medicine, that comply with international standards and guidelines. Dr Tielman Johannes Roos Scholtz (1887 - 1932)

If I recall correctly, I was a registrar in General Surgery, when I was told this story by Dr "Lang Loubie" (J Loubser), a well loved and highly respected part-time Consultant, while scrubbing for a surgical procedure at the Pretoria Academic Hospital. The story resembled an urban legend, but Dr Loubie was better known for his love of philosophy, rather than story telling.

Twenty five years later, I came across an obituary contianed in the S.A.Medical Journal of 26 November 1932 . The following is based on the information obtained from that obituary. Coincidence? Dr Loubie might have ascribed it to "synchronicity"

Charles Theodore Dotter

This infographic examines the life and legacy of Charles Theodore Dotter, the visionary physician widely recognised as the father of interventional radiology. The original article, cited below, explores how Dotter’s mechanical ingenuity and "radical" willingness to experiment led to the invention of the safety guidewire, percutaneous arterial stenting, and his landmark achievement, the first transluminal angioplasty in 1964. Beyond his technical milestones, the narrative highlights a recurring theme of innovation over surgery, documenting Dotter's lifelong pursuit to replace the traditional scalpel with catheter-based therapies to reduce patient risk. The source also provides a colorful portrait of Dotter’s flamboyant personality and personal passions, illustrating how his unconventional approach and perseverance eventually transformed the medical landscape despite years of skepticism from his peers.
