This article reports South Africa’s first case of spondylodiscitis caused by the rare pathogen Gemella morbillorum. This spinal infection, though uncommon, requires careful diagnosis and targeted antibiotic treatment. The study describes the successful recovery of a 55-year-old patient, emphasizing the need for timely, culture-specific therapy in managing infections from rare pathogens.

A Patient’s Journey to Recovery

On September 4, 2023, a 23-year-old male was involved in a severe head-on collision. Unfortunately, he was not wearing his seatbelt, resulting in life-changing injuries including paraplegia. He sustained a C7 burst fracture, oedema around the vertebral bodies of C2-C6, and spinal cord oedema from C2 to T1.

In response, we performed a complex anterior cervical fusion and decompression from C3 to T1, removed the damaged C7 vertebra, and replaced it with a mesh case. During his hospital stay, he faced challenges with wound issues and breathing problems, necessitating a tracheostomy. Due to the severity of his condition and funding issues, he spent an extended period in ICU.

Today, exactly one year later, on September 4, 2024, we are thrilled to share that he has been discharged to a rehabilitation center. The hospital gave him a heartfelt send-off, marking this important milestone in his recovery journey. 🌟

Here’s to strength, resilience, and the road ahead. 💪🙏
