Christi Gadd Clinical & Neuropsychologist Clinical Psychologist in Garsfontein/Faerie Glen, Pretoria East. I'm intrigued by the essence of hum

I am a clinical psychologist with a passion for human relationships. I enjoy working with individuals, couples and families in order to assist them in dealing with whichever challenge they are currently facing. The human brain and the manner in which it regulates our behaviour intrigues me. In this regard, I provide psychotherapy to assist a person and his/her family in adjusting to the impact of a brain injury or illness. I am employed full-time at 1 Military Hospital, where I am responsible for the neuro-rehabilitation ward. I also run an after hours private practice in Faerie Glen, Pretoria-East.

The relationship between our brain and behaviour has always fascinated me — and it’s at the heart of my work as a psychologist and a neuropsychologist. I feel deeply privileged to support people on their journeys with neurocognitive conditions.

In this episode of the Thrive With Us podcast, I sit down with Dr. Sarah Rasmi and Dr. Ash Shishodia to talk about Dementia and other Neurocognitive Disorders.

We explore not only the impact on the individual, but also on the family members and caregivers — especially when living far away from loved ones as an expat in Dubai.

If you’re supporting someone with a neurocognitive condition, or simply want to understand these experiences better, this conversation may offer both insight and comfort.

I’ve spent the last two days recapping and expanding on one of the cornerstones of my therapeutic work – the Interactional Pattern Analysis (IPA).

The IPA, developed by Prof. Charl Vorster, is a powerful psychodiagnostic tool that guides therapeutic intervention by helping us deeply understand relationship dynamics.

The depth and nuance Dr Warwick Phipps from brings to this work is truly unrivalled.

I cannot recommend this training highly enough for any practitioner working with couples, families, or relational systems. It’s a resource that continues to shape and strengthen my practice.

Last week, I had the privilege of contributing to an article for The National exploring a powerful shift in the world of elite sport: more and more athletes are recognising the importance of prioritising their mental health.

As a psychologist in Dubai, I often work with high performers — not just athletes, but professionals and creatives — who are learning that sustainable success requires tending to both performance and wellbeing.

In the article, I shared:
“When someone at the top says: ‘I stepped back to rediscover joy’, it reminds us all that performance and pleasure can co-exist – and that stepping back isn’t giving up, but a step towards something deeper.”

The past few weeks, this quote has been sitting quietly in the back of my mind as I’ve been sitting with how deeply connected self-awareness and growth are in my work as a psychologist.

The more I learn about my clients - their stories, their pain, their courage - the more I’m invited to understand myself. And in turn, the more I’m willing to look inward, the better I’m able to hold space for others.

This quiet truth sits at the heart of the therapeutic process - whether in-person or through online therapy.

, and Neuropsychiatrist Dr. Ash Shishodia from spent the day in the podcast studio diving deep into an often-overlooked topic: the nuanced impact of neurocognitive conditions — not just on the individuals diagnosed, but on the caregivers who walk the journey alongside them.

From emotional strain and role shifts to identity changes and long-term burnout risks, we explored the many layers of caregiving and the importance of support, awareness, and compassion for everyone affected.

Lately, I’ve found myself talking a lot about survival — in sessions, in conversations with colleagues, and quietly in my own reflections.

Sometimes we go through seasons where getting through the day is more than enough. Survival takes energy, courage, and strength. But this quote reminded me that surviving isn’t the whole story.

We weren’t born just to endure — we were born to live. To feel the full range of this wild, beautiful, messy existence. To fall and get up again. To connect deeply, to grow, to be surprised by joy.

If you’re in survival mode right now, that’s okay. Just don’t forget that there’s more waiting for you on the other side.

We were made to live, my dear — not just exist.

Self-care Sunday: messy hair, messy brush strokes, and the space to process messy emotions.

Sometimes, words aren’t enough—so we let the colors, shapes, and textures do the talking.

Art therapy: because healing isn’t always linear, and self-expression doesn’t have to be perfect.
