This is exactly the kind of thing we should be using AI for — and showcases the true potential of artificial intelligence.

Scientists created an AI system called AsymMirai. It's a streamlined deep-learning algorithm that can detect breast cancer up to five years in advance.

Researchers at Duke University used AsymMirai to analyze differences between left and right breast tissue visible in mammograms — a factor previously underutilized for long-term cancer prediction. With this approach, the AI could achieve nearly the same accuracy as previous systems while being acutely simpler for radiologists to understand and more reliable.

The study involved over 210,000 mammograms and underscored the clinical importance of breast asymmetry in forecasting cancer risk.

Lead researcher Jon Donnelly emphasized the potential public health implications of AsymMirai, noting that its insights could shape recommendations for mammogram frequency and improve early detection strategies.

Sipping on lemon water might seem like just a refreshing way to start your day, but it packs more than a zesty punch.

Studies suggest that the vitamin C and antioxidants present in lemons can help significantly reduce fat deposited in the liver by enhancing detoxification. The high levels of antioxidants found in lemon water can also help protect liver cells from damage and reduce inflammation.

Another way to support your liver is with TUDCA, short for tauroursodeoxycholic acid. This naturally occurring bile acid supports digestive health and nutrient absorption and can also promote optimal bile flow—which is vital for healthy liver function.

The common theory that Alzheimer's disease is caused by the buildup of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain is now being challenged by a new theory.

Now, scientists say Alzheimer's may actually be an autoimmune disease.

This theory is based on 30 years of research. It suggests that beta-amyloid, rather than being an abnormal protein, is actually a component of the brain's immune system.

Its role is to protect the brain from injury and infection, but due to the similarity between the fat molecules in bacterial membranes and brain cell membranes, beta-amyloid mistakenly attacks the brain cells it's meant to defend. This leads to a chronic, progressive loss of brain function, ultimately resulting in dementia.

This autoimmune misfire redefines Alzheimer’s as a disorder of the immune system. The autoimmune theory opens up new avenues for treatment by focusing on immune-regulating pathways in the brain, rather than solely targeting beta-amyloid. It offers a promising new direction for research and treatment, potentially leading to more effective therapies for Alzheimer's disease.

Autoimmune diseases occur when your immune system mistakenly attacks your body's own tissues, leading to inflammation and damage. There are over 80 recognized types, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis. Common symptoms include fatigue, joint pain, skin rashes, and fever. While the exact causes are unclear, factors like genetics, infections, and environmental exposures may contribute.

Your body consists of 37 trillion cells divided into 200 different types.

100 billion cells make up the skin, which is the largest organ in your body. 100 billion neurons in the brain allow you to process as many as 60,000 thought per day.

You also have 127 million retinal cells that allow you to see the world in as many as 10 million different colors.

You have 30 trillion red blood cells, 42 billion blood vessels, and 6 liters (1.6 gallons) of blood in your body. Your blood makes approximately 10% of your body weight. Your nose has 1,000 olfactory receptors that allow you to distinguish 50,000 different smells.

Your lungs allow you to breathe 23,040 breaths per day, while your heart beats around 115,200 heartbeats per day or 42 million heartbeats per year.

You have 640 muscles, 360 joints, 206 bones and 100,000 hair follicles. You produce around 23,000 liters (6,075 gallons) of saliva in your lifetime, which is enough to fill two swimming pools

What's the difference between X-Ray, CT scan, and MRI?

X-rays use electromagnetic radiation to create images of bones and dense structures within the body. It is commonly used to detect fractures, infections, tumors, and other abnormalities.

X-rays are quick, relatively inexpensive, and readily available.

CT scans use X-rays and advanced computer processing to create cross-sectional images of the body. They provide more detailed information than traditional X-rays and can show bones, organs, blood vessels, and soft tissues.

CT scans are useful in diagnosing conditions such as internal injuries, tumors, infections, and blood clots.

MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of soft tissues, organs, and structures inside the body. It provides excellent contrast between different types of soft tissues and is particularly useful for imaging the brain, spinal cord, joints, and muscles.

MRI does not involve ionizing radiation, making it a safer option for imaging, especially for pregnant women and children.

However, MRI scans take longer to perform, are more expensive, and may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical implants or metal objects in their bodies

A Fasting Diet Could Reverse Diabetes And Repair The Pancreas, Research Shows:

Researchers have found a potential breakthrough in diabetes treatment by using a version of the fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) to reverse symptoms and restore pancreatic functions in mice.

This diet, developed by scientists at the University of Southern California, tricks the body into a fasting state for a few days each month while still allowing the consumption of carefully selected foods.

The approach appears to stimulate the pancreas to regenerate insulin-producing beta cells, effectively rebooting the organ’s functionality and reversing diabetes symptoms.

Under the FMD, mice with both type I and type II diabetes were put into a fasting-like state four days a week, leading to significant regeneration of beta cells in their pancreas.

The researchers also tested pancreatic cell cultures from human donors with type I diabetes, finding that simulated fasting boosted insulin production and increased the presence of the Ngn3 protein, which is essential for normal pancreatic function.

While the results are promising, the researchers caution against trying this approach at home; the diet requires strict regulation of calories and food types, and further human trials are necessary.

These findings, published in Cell, suggest the FMD could someday offer a non-invasive way to restore pancreatic function and treat diabetes without relying on medication or genetic modifications.
