On Wednesdays we bake!

Baking muffins might seem simple but in occupational therapy, it’s a powerful, meaningful activity that supports healthy ageing.

As an occupational therapist, I love using baking because it targets so many important skills at once:

Fine motor skills: measuring, pouring, stirring, cracking eggs, and spooning batter strengthen hand coordination and dexterity.
Cognitive skills: following a recipe supports sequencing, memory, attention, problem-solving, and executive functioning.
Bilateral coordination: using both hands together (holding a bowl while stirring) promotes upper limb integration.
Standing tolerance & balance: working at the counter builds endurance and postural stability.
Safety awareness: navigating the kitchen environment supports judgement and hazard awareness.
Emotional wellbeing: baking often sparks positive memories, boosts confidence, and provides a sense of accomplishment.
Social connection: sharing muffins creates opportunities for conversation and community engagement.

Functional, purposeful activities like baking help maintain independence in daily living — and they’re enjoyable too!

Because therapy works best when it’s meaningful.

Happy World Occupational Therapy Day!

Today we celebrate a profession that’s so close to my heart, Occupational Therapy!

As an OT, I have the privilege of helping older adults stay independent, safe, and connected to the things that make life meaningful. Whether it’s finding new ways to do daily tasks, making homes safer, or keeping minds and bodies active.

Our elderly community has so much wisdom and strength, and it’s an honour to help them keep doing what they love.

Here’s to all the amazing OTs out there making a difference every day and to our clients who inspire us to keep learning, adapting, and caring.
