🧸Learning Prepositions!

Through simple, hands-on play, children are learning important concepts like:
✔️ in
✔️ on
✔️ under
✔️ behind
✔️ in front of
✔️ between

By moving Teddy around and describing where he is, children build vocabulary, improve sentence structure, and strengthen their understanding of spatial concepts—all while having fun! Activities like this are perfect for developing expressive language and following directions.⭐️

🧸Try it at home: Grab a toy and practice giving simple instructions like “Put Teddy under the table” or ask “Where is Teddy now?”

Hands-on activities like this help make learning meaningful and engaging for little learners. 💛

Learning is fun!😁

We had to search for specific items using a flashlight - how cool!🕵‍♂️

Then, we had to identify our first, middle and last sounds - developing phonological awareness and auditory perception.

This was so much fun, we did not want the session to end! This is your reminder that kids learn through play - and yes, spelling can be fun! That's how you keep kids interested and engaged. It's really a win-win situation!👏

How to stimulate language this Easter🥚

• Counting the eggs
• The ones I've used in the photo below, can open - so it splits in half (half is a concept to practice here, and you can cut other items in half while preparing food (e.g. apples, bananas, strawberries, sausages etc)
• When the egg opens, it has a shape inside
• There are various colours - matching them, identify and name each 🎨
• Prepositions (one of my favourites!) Hiding the eggs and then when found, emphasize the preposition (position of the egg); on the chair, under the table, behind the plant, inside the basket etc.

And lastly... HAVE FUN!😁 Enjoy time outdoors, stimulate language and expose your child to different textures.

Although Easter is fun-filled and the eggs are delicious, let's all remember the real reason why we celebrate this weekend.🙏

Grace upon grace! We are all so blessed!💕

Looking at how kids develop skills can be a part of considering an Autism diagnosis, but it’s often not in a way people expect.

Being autistic does not mean a person missed and never developed common milestones (like the stereotypical examples - speaking, pointing, eye contact, pretend play, etc). Autistic people can develop these within the typical timeframe, on a delayed timeframe, or never… but people tend to think it’s never for all - when that’s just not true for most.

😳Blank stares.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That's what I usually get when I tell people I'm an OT.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We seriously DID NOT get enough training in school on how to answer this question.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To be fair, our title is deceiving.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Especially when working with children.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
People ALWAYS assume we have something to do with helping people "work".
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But as any good paediatric occupational therapist will do, we then joke that in fact, children have very important "jobs" to do.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My next, oh-so-witty OT joke, when I'm explaining my role to a new parent or family is this: "well, the speech therapist will help your child talk, the physiotherapist will help your child walk, then the occupational therapist will look at all the other stuff in between".

I'm hilarious.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our role is confusing, & depending on one's expertise & experience, the way we help support a child or family can look completely different than another OT.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We've become a jack of all trades of sorts- but our main goal is often to restore & promote daily function. Especially when we are working with kids, we like to think we put the "fun" in function!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To us, occupations are the meaningful activities that we need & want to engage in every day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For a variety of reasons, a child may have difficulty doing the things they want to do.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And boy- don't our kids & babies have some pretty important jobs to do?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Eating, sleeping, playing, moving, learning, exploring, bathing, dressing.... etc.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So an OT can help if your child is having difficulties participating in any of these daily activities.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are trained to analyze tasks. Break them down into manageable chunks & really get to the root of the challenge.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We will look at the child, the environment & the task itself:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Does the child need to work on a specific skill?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Can the environment be modified, changed in any way to support that child's individual needs?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Can the task itself be modified or changed in a way to help that child be successful?

-
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now, Did that help?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What do you want to know about OT?
