Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure that aims to restore the shape and appearance of the breast following a mastectomy (the surgical removal of the breast, typically due to cancer) or, in some cases, after a lumpectomy. It can also be used to correct congenital deformities or damage to the breast resulting from trauma.
This procedure can be performed either at the time of the mastectomy or as a delayed option. While most reconstructions are done immediately, certain surgical findings may require postponing the reconstruction until after the completion of any necessary radiation treatment.
Typically, breast reconstruction is carried out in 2 to 3 stages. The first stage involves creating a breast mound and concludes with the reconstruction of the ni**le-ar**la complex.
Reconstruction can be performed using autologous tissue (the patient's own tissue), prosthetic implants, or a combination of both methods, depending on individual needs, additional therapies, and patient preferences.
All available options will be discussed in detail during your consultation to determine the best approach for your situation and to set realistic expectations for the outcome.
