Day 15: Heal Together

“Healing is power — let’s build safe spaces.”

When reaching out to a loved one who may be experiencing abuse, it's crucial to approach the situation with empathy and understanding. Remember, the abuse is never the victim's fault.

Here are some steps you can take to support someone experiencing abuse:

Listen and Validate: Listen to the survivor’s story without judgment and assure them that their experiences are valid. Let them know that they are not alone and that you are there to support them.

Create a Safe Space: Ensure that the environment is safe and conducive to open communication. Choose a private location where the survivor feels comfortable sharing their story without fear of judgment or interruption.

Offer Options, Not Ultimatums: Avoid telling the survivor what they must do. Instead, provide them with information about available resources and support services. Empower them to make their own decisions and offer to assist them in exploring their options.

However, there are certain things to avoid when supporting survivors of abuse:

Avoid Minimizing or Blaming: Refrain from minimizing the survivor's experiences or placing blame on them. Avoid phrases like "Why didn't you leave?" Instead, offer validation and support without judgment.

Do Not Assume: Avoid assuming that you know what the survivor is feeling unless you have experienced similar situations yourself. Each survivor's experience is unique, and it's essential to listen to their perspective without imposing your own assumptions.

Provide Validating Messages: Reassure the survivor that their feelings are valid and that they deserve to live free from violence. Offer affirmations such as "It's not your fault" and "You have the right to safety and security

Day 14: Care for Children
“Protect childhood — every child deserves safety.”

All children deserve safety and protection, and the opportunity to play and learn

Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan once spoke about the importance of creating safe environments for children, saying: "There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from fear and want and that they grow up in peace."

As we empower our girls and young women, let's reach out and empower the children in our own communities.

Collect and donate toys, books, or blankets for a children’s home. When delivering the little gifts, take time out to read or tell a story about kindness and protection to the children.

Day 13: Community Watch

“Safe streets, strong communities.”

In 2017, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts the largest movement of girls in the world working with 10 million girls in 150 countries conducted a poll and found that of 7000 young people who responded 70% said the streets are the most unsafe place to be a girl. More than 400 drawings from around the world depicted the violence and harassment girls experience when occupying the streets. This is unacceptable!

We call on you to stand with girls and women by not only developing infrastructure but, critically, by focusing on tackling the harmful social norms and stereotypes that lead to the harassment of girls and women in the streets.

This is possible though education, awareness raising, community action and
more. We call for the criminalisation of street
harassment and prosecution of perpetrators. Girls and women cannot feel safe in a culture where impunity thrives and perpetrators are not held accountable for their actions.

Together with your friends map out your community and label places you feel safe.

Advocacy is speaking out to influence people in positions of power. Who has power over the unsafe places ? Who can effect change and creat safe spaces? Can you speak to these people?

Take action by walking together in your neighborhood wearing orange ribbons to spread awareness.

🌍👧🏾 "Girls’ voices are essential to international law, yet too often, they’re shut out of the rooms where decisions are made."

From community campaigns against child marriage to global advocacy at the UN Commission on the Status of Women, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts are driving change worldwide. But international systems that claim to protect women and girls continue to fall short.

As 10 million girls and young women across the WAGGGS Movement speak up, their message is clear:
⚖️ A seat at the table must translate into action.
đź’° Commitments must be resourced and enforced.
đźš« Impunity must end, in all its forms.

During the campaign, we’re calling for courageous leadership – international laws that reflect girls’ lived realities, meaningful youth participation, and accountability that delivers justice, not empty promises.

✨ It’s time for the international community to match girls’ courage and uphold the rule of law for every woman and girl.

Guiding for Change

Day 11: Media Awareness

“Challenge harmful media messages.”

Videos and media programs can be a powerful influence in developing value systems and shaping behavior. Unfortunately, much of contemporary television programming features violence. Hundreds of studies of the effects of screen violence on children and teenagers have found that children may:

- Become "immune" or numb to the horror of violence
- Begin to accept violence as a way to solve problems
- Imitate the violence they observe on screens; and
- Identify with certain characters, victims and/or victimizers

Representations of women in the media have developed and changed with time to reflect the
cultural and sociological changes in society. However, female stereotypes
continue to appear in some media texts.

Representations of women are often defined by how men see women (termed the '
male gaze'), or by how society expects women to look and behave.

We can make a change. Next time you watch a television series or movie, or stream a video online, look out for examples of sexist or violent portrayals in media.

Redesign a movie poster, magazine cover or advertisement poster to promote equality instead.

Day 10: Self-Defence and Safety

“Confidence is your shield.”

Confidence is your first line of self-defence. Learn about how mindset and awareness help you stay safe and project strength

Be aware of and engaged with your surroundings. True self-defence begins long before any actual physical contact. The first and probably most important, component in self-defence is awareness: awareness of yourself, your surroundings, and your potential attacker’s likely strategies.

When you are going out, whether it be alone or with a group of friends, it is best to have a plan in place. Knowing your surroundings, such as who and what is in the immediate area, is one of the most crucial safety tips to remember. Making a habit to pay attention to what is going on around you will help you become more aware of your environment. In addition, as an extra level of precaution, let someone outside of your group know your whereabouts and what you have planned for the day/evening.

Learn a few basic self-defence moves or safety habits.

More more aware of your surroundings next time you walk to the shop, school or work and not being distracted by your your phone.
