WHAT TO EXPECT WITH YOUR 1ST REFLEXOLOGY TREATMENT?
If you have never experienced reflexology before, you may be a little apprehensive.
You will have an opportunity to ask any question that you may have. Remember that it is okay, and even expected for you to ask questions! Even during the session, you may ask questions.
Here are some requirements before your treatment that may aid the benefits.
BEFORE THE TREATMENT
• DRINK PLENTLY OF WATER. You need to be hydrated…… In the days before your reflexology session increase your water intake.
• Ensure you have time for the treatment, don’t try squeezing it in-between other appointments… as you need to give yourself time to arrive and be relaxed. You do not want to arrive stressed out as it will take longer for you to get into a relaxed state.
• Do not eat before your treatment.
• You will never to asked to undress as I will only be working on your feet, and halfway up the legs. Try to wear loose comfortable clothing so that you feel relaxed whilst laying down on the plinth.
• At the start of the first session,
o I will go through a health consultation, to find out about any medication that you need to take, recent operations and illnesses
o I will need to understand your reasons for trying reflexology.
o Ensure to tell me everything, even the minor symptoms,
o discuss any apprehensions or concerns - all information you give is confidential.
o I will then assess your feet for open wounds, rashes, sores, plantar warts or bunions and will need to know about any foot or leg pain that may hinder treatment
I will then start the warm-up, to relax your feet (and you), and then proceed with the Reflexology session starting at the toes and working down the foot. I will apply a small amount of powder to help work my fingers and thumbs across the reflex points on your feet. Even though in the consultation you have discussed certain areas of concern, I may find other areas of concern and mark them off, to ensure I go back and work the target areas more closely after the initial treatment.
Having a specific condition in mind allows me to carefully feel and work the area corresponding to the problem, allowing the nerve pathways and congestion to be released and to promote the relation response for the entire body.
To get the most from your reflexology treatment
1 – Be open to the treatment
2 – Relax, if you feel you need to fall asleep, I can still work your feet, and you may just need the extra 45 minutes…
3 – Remember to breathe, this helps you to relax. Don’t hold your breath when a sensitive area is massaged, breathe through it, let me know that it is a bit sensitive, if I have not picked it up.
WHAT WILL I EXPERIENCE DURING THE SESSION?
Your reflexology experience will vary, you may feel different with each session.
• a general sense of relaxation and rest to a conscious awareness internally corresponding to the area of the body where the therapist is working through.
• You may experience a “lightness” or tingling in the body, or feelings of warmth, a sense of “opening” or “energy moving” from the pressure being applied to the specific body area or organ.
Other reactions during the session range from
– Perspiration of hands or feet
– Sensation of being cold or chilled
– Feeling light-headed
– Coughing
– Laughing/crying
ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS
Is it common to experience emotions?
It depends, you might be having a day filled with emotions whether that be sadness, joy or exhaustion. Sometimes touch, like music can bring your feelings to the surface and emotions may be released, don’t be alarmed, I will monitor how you are doing and adjust the treatment accordingly.
Is it okay to talk?
Yes, it’s fine to talk, although it may be more beneficial if you let go of your worries and concerns. If you are nervous and feel the need to engage in conversation I will understand. Keep in mind that the we are trained not to talk during the treatment, and will simply answer your questions, and will stay in constant contact with you regarding your pain levels and measuring relief.
REMEMBER REFLEXOLOGISTS DO NOT DIAGNOSE
One of the theories of reflexology is that the body will nurture and repair itself once released from stress. If the body is extremely stressed, the therapist may refer you to a medical team or another treatment, if appropriate, but at no time will the therapist give medical advice or diagnosis.
AFTER TREATMENT
The treatment will end with a similar process that I started with, the important aspect is for you to feel relaxed and that you feel you have had time for yourself.
You should be advised to drink water, rest if necessary and pay attention to your body in the next few hours.
Treatment time will last 60-90 minutes and it is generally recommended that you have weekly treatments initially, although reflexology is safe to have more frequently if required.
