My top ten tips for managing teenagers with ADHD:
1. Expect ADHD to ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ into adolescence; it usually does.
2. Respect your teenager's need for (and right to) ๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐จ๐ง๐จ๐ฆ๐ฒ regarding their treatment; keep the dialogue open.
3. Expect ๐ฐ๐ผ-๐ฒ๐
๐ถ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐๐๐ in youth presenting with other conditions, especially anxiety, depression and substance abuse.
4. Doctors should have a high index of suspicion for ๐๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐ ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฌ; more and more non-ADHD youth are looking for short-cuts to assist with their studies.
5. Consider the possibility that ADHD may ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ in adolescence, especially in girls.
6. Educate parents and children about the dangers of ๐ฌ๐๐ซ๐๐๐ง ๐๐๐๐ข๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง; research suggests a bidirectional relationship between ADHD and excessive media use.
7. Piggy-back on the adolescent trait of ๐ซ๐๐ฐ๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ง๐๐๐ง๐๐; use the carrot more that the stick.
8. Educate young people about the value of cardiovascular ๐ฒ๐
๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ถ๐๐ฒ, which enhances the brain's executive functions, reduces stress and improves sleep.
9. Emphasise the importance of a good nightโs ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐๐๐ฉ; 78% of those with ADHD have sleep disturbance, which further compromises academic functioning the next day.
10. Do whatever you can to ๐ซ๐๐ญ๐๐ข๐ง ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ง๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง with your child. Adolescents naturally gravitate away from their parents and towards their peers. If those same parents are constantly reprimanding them, this gap becomes a chasm and the teenager may look for acceptance in the wrong places.
