It's officially bag-to-school season, meaning the time has come to sharpen those pencils and pack up your school bag for yet another year ππ
Backpack ergonomics is crucial to prevent discomfort, injury and long term back pain.
How can you reduce the risk of back pain caused by backpacks?
1. Consider shape and size
The backpack should be appropriately sized for the student. To avoid oversized bags, the width of the backpack should not exceed the width of the childβs torso.
2.Weight distribution
Opt for a backpack with multiple compartments to distribute weight evenly. Place heavier items, eg textbooks, closest to your back.
3.Consider position
The bottom of the bag should rest at or just above the waistline.
4.Straps
Look for straps that are adjustable and have a sufficient amount of padding to protect your shoulders. Use both straps to distribute the weight evenly.
5.Hip and Chest Belts
Hip and chest belts can be used to improve balance and reduce pressure on shoulders.
Safe Lifting
By following safe lifting techniques, you can protect your body from injuries and pain.
*Lift with your legs
*Don't bend to the side
*Keep your back straight
*Use both hands
*If lifting with one hand, keep wrist straight
