Professor Gertie Pretorius has been registered as a Counselling Psychologist for the past 35 years and as a research Psychologist for the past seven years. As a Therapist and a Professor of Psychology I have straddled the divide between theory and practice while training countless Clinical and Counselling Psychologists in both the science and the art of psychotherapy. I am currently in private practice where I fulfil my vocation as a therapist, facilitating healing, growth and resilience in my clients. Apart from my professional qualifications as a Psychologist I also hold a Master’s degree in Philosophy, specialising in Ethics which underpins my passion for practising in an ethical way. I respect diversity in language, culture, religion and sexual orientation. I am highly skilled in counselling and therapy for couples, parents, adolescents and children. My therapeutic approach is holistic and integrative as I believe that the physiological, emotional, cognitive and behavioural systems are influenced by the relationships we find ourselves in and we, in turn, influence our relationships. As a therapist it is my priority to select the best therapeutic approach for each individual, couple or family from my wide range of therapeutic competencies, skills and techniques. The aim of therapy is always to facilitate constructive change and to find meaning in everyday life challenges. I believe that all people have the capacity to turn tragedy into triumph. In my practice as a Counselling Psychologist, I guide people through the pain of trauma, divorce, retrenchment and the stress of work and everyday life. As I believe that our existence in all stages of life should be meaningful I also prepare people for retirement. I do marriage and couples therapy, and assist parents with the difficult task of parenting. I am passionate about gender issues focussing on the difficulties both women and men face in everyday life. These issues range from abusive relationships to workplace bullying and developing skills to cope with life. I assist women who are faced with developmental transitions like motherhood, empty nest and menopause, to embrace those changes with new perceptions and skills so that they can flourish. I also do Career Counselling for grade 10, 11 and 12 learners, as well as subject choice for grade 9, and Career development for adults who want to change or enhance their qualifications and careers. In addition to therapy and counselling, I am highly qualified and experienced in Psycho-Legal (forensic) work. I have extensive experience in the field of crime, fraud, sexual crimes, family and custody matters as well as labour related issues. I assist the Honourable Court in matters pertaining to both alleged perpetrators and victims. As an experienced Psychologist and Professor of Psychology I mentor, supervise and train Psychologists in all registration categories. IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING POPI ACT:
