🦠 Do you really need a daily probiotic supplement?
NOT ALWAYS, but in some cases : YES.
Let’s break down what the science says πŸ§¬πŸ‘‡πŸ½

βœ… Some strains (like Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG or S. boulardii) can help with diarrhea, IBS, and post-antibiotic recovery.
❌ But that doesn’t mean you need a random probiotic every day.

Here’s what does matter:
πŸ” The right strain
πŸ§ͺ At the right dose
πŸ“¦ Stored properly
πŸ“š And matched to your specific health need.

✨ For many South Africans, traditional foods like amasi/maas, fermented cabbage, ting, incwancwa, yogurt with live culture, kefir, and kombucha are affordable probiotic sources too.

Before spending on a supplement, speak to your doctor or dietitian to find the right one for your body and condition.

It's been another incredible week, packed with exciting opportunities. No opportunity is too small, here are two unpaid opportunities that I had this week & still brought my A game as usual.

1. Ended off the week with a fantastic Alex FM interview, sharing insights on kids' hydration.
2. Had a blast speaking with a lively group of ladies about nutrition - their energy was top tier!

Also finished & shared my Diabetes nutrition guide written fully in IsiZulu πŸ‘πŸΎ

My ability to adapt and thrive in any environment has been instrumental in my career success πŸ€ŒπŸΌπŸ‘πŸΎ. Flexibility has been key to my growth πŸ“Œ.

Wishing you all a fabulous weekend! xx

Working with older clients, often brought by their loved ones, has shown me the importance of providing nutrition info in local languages, beyond basic translations.

Next, I'll tackle Tshivenda, Sesotho & Xitsonga translations πŸ‘ŠπŸ½πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦

Hi, I am Mbali Mapholi. I am a dietitian.

It’s Dietitians Week*l and I’m celebrating by standing proudly in who I am and what I eat.

I am a dietitian who loves and eats *uphuthu* (pap).

I believe chicken insides, necks, feet, pilchards, and amasi are not β€œpoverty food” – they are just food.

Tea + Snack Pairing
I did Tea pairing with Tetley SA (You've seen BTS 😬)
Here is my take:

🍏 Green tea (apple-flavoured): Light and fresh. Think apples with peanut butter, cucumber sandwiches or crackers with avo. It felt grounding and clean – like a soft reset for your senses.

🍫 Chamomile tea: I paired it with blueberries and dark chocolate – wow. It smoothed out the richness of the chocolate and gave this calming, soft finish. Like wrapping your tastebuds in a blanket.

πŸ‹ Earl Grey: That bergamot flavour + lemon zest cake? Also works beautifully with jam sandwiches or classic scones. It was giving flower field realness 🌸

πŸ₯ Black tea: The OG. Paired it with savoury bites like sausage & cheese croissants, samosas, and roasted sweet potato. Strong. Bold. Comforting. Full nostalgia.

This was such a vibe – and it made me think… we often pair wine with food, but why not tea?

Disclaimer: I work with Tetley as a brand health consultant, I love tea but I am paid to enjoy tea basically.

Disclaimer: I work with Tetley as a brand health consultant β€” so yes, I love tea, and yes… I am quite literally paid to enjoy tea. Not mad about it.

Today is World Hypertension Day – here are 5 things I wish every South African knew:

Did you know?
1 in 3 adults in South Africa has high blood pressure and many don’t even know it.
The good news? Small changes in your diet can make a big difference.

1. β€œHealthy” foods can still be salty!
Even soups, stock cubes, sauces and meat alternatives can be full of salt.
πŸ’šCheck the label – choose products with less than 120mg sodium per 100g.

2. Rooibos is your heart's best friend
It’s local, caffeine-free, naturally low in salt – and budget-friendly.
πŸ’š Swap your usual cooldrink for rooibos, or use it as stock in your curry or stew.

3. Your tastebuds can unlearn salty cravings.
Yes! Your body can get used to less salt over time.
πŸ’šCut back by just one pinch and add flavour using garlic, lemon, vinegar, herbs or chilli.

4. Traditional greens = natural blood pressure helpers e.g., Any morogo - spinach, pumpkin leaves, imbuya are all packed with potassium to help balance sodium.
πŸ’šAdd a handful of greens to lunch or dinner.

5. Fermented foods = power for your gut and your heart
Your gut health plays a role in managing blood pressure.
πŸ’šEasy additions: Enjoy incwancwa, ting (sour sorghum porridge), or maas with pap, uphuthu, or bread.
