World Leprosy Day | 25 January 2026
Yesterday, 25 January 2026, we observed World Leprosy Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting early diagnosis and treatment of leprosy.
What is leprosy?
Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. It primarily affects the skin, peripheral nerves, upper respiratory tract, and eyes.
Key facts about leprosy:
-It is not highly contagious and is not spread through casual contact such as shaking hands or sitting next to someone.
-The disease spreads mainly through prolonged close contact with untreated individuals via respiratory droplets.
-Early diagnosis and treatment prevent disability and long-term complications.
Despite common misconceptions, leprosy still exists today, with cases reported in several parts of the world.
World Leprosy Day reminds us of the importance of education, compassion, and inclusion. By increasing awareness, we can help eliminate stigma and ensure that those affected receive timely care and support.
Together, we can support a future free from discrimination and preventable disability.
