A Call for Respect:
The Diminishing Reverence for Funerals
Yesterday, we had the privilege of assisting with the final send-off for Evangelist Colin Appolis. Despite the poor weather conditions, the greater issue that weighed on my mind was the clear loss of respect our society now shows for funeral processions.
I recall a time in my childhood when pausing for a funeral was an unquestioned act of courtesy. My father, in particular, would never lose his patience; if he was wearing a cap, he would respectfully remove it as the cortège passed.
Contrast this with what we experience yesterday.. While driving in yesterday's procession, a motorist nearly collided with the hearse, attempting to aggressively cut in front of the line. This type of disrespect, sadly, is becoming an all-too-common occurrence.
It is disheartening to see the traditions of reverence and courtesy for the bereaved fading away. We must strive to reclaim this basic level of human respect during these most sacred moments of passage.
