👋 Meet Akira

✨️ With a special interest in sports and orthopedics, Akira has worked field-side with various sports teams and pursued specialized courses in concussion management and vestibular training. She also manages gymnasts at two Johannesburg clubs and is developing a niche in treating adolescent athlete injuries.

✨️ Akira graduated with her physiotherapy degree from Wits University in 2020 and completed her community service at Far East Rand Hospital. She has since worked in both hospital and sports/outpatient settings at Motion Physio.

✨️ Outside of physiotherapy, Akira loves dancing, hiking, and escaping into nature.

👋Meet Clare-Anne

✨️Clare-Anne earned her degree from Wits University in 2000 and has dedicated her career to clinical excellence and research.

✨️She started her practice in 2003 and worked with various sports teams, including rugby and hockey, earning recognition as Club Person of the Year at RAU Rugby. As RAU became UJ, she expanded her focus to injury prevention and management, developing key strategies for UJ and Wits teams.

✨️Clare-Anne completed her MPhil at UCT in 2004 and has collaborated with performing arts organizations, including the Cape Town City Ballet and Matilda production.

✨With a special interest in gymnastics and swimming, she has worked on injury prevention programs for local clubs and adolescent athletes.

✨Since 2005, she’s been a key part of the Wits Physiotherapy Sports Programme and an advocate for public-private partnerships.

✨ It is with very tender hearts that we say farewell to Jenna Levendis ✨

After 5 amazing years at Motion Physiotherapy, it's time for us to say goodbye for now to our incredible physiotherapist and treasured team member, Jenna. 🙌

Jenna is wanting to travel a bit, and because she is such a huge part of what makes our practice, we decided it best to announce it here.

Jenna's passion for rehabilitation and healing has touched the lives of so many patients. Her commitment to helping others return to what they love has been truly inspiring, and we’ve loved watching her grow in her expertise, currently advancing her knowledge in Sports Physiotherapy.

From everyone at Motion, we would like to extend the heartiest thank you for all she’s done to build our practice into the thriving, wonderful community it is today. Through your kind words, incredible mentorship and unwavering positivity - you have a special place in our hearts.

👋 Meet Wendy

✨️Wendy-Ann Wood’s current research focuses on outcomes post-elective knee surgery, particularly the role of health literacy.

✨️Wendy is also interested in the link between mental health and musculoskeletal health.

✨️She completed her Master’s in Sports and Exercise Physiotherapy at Wits in 2004 and her PhD in 2011.

✨️She is a sessional lecturer at Wits University, teaching Orthopedics and Sports Physiotherapy at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

✨️Wendy also teaches and examines on the SPT and ANMS courses with the South African Society of Physiotherapy.

Here’s a quick guide:

✨️Static Stretch: Hold for 30 sec after exercise.
✨️Passive Stretch: Use external force for deeper stretches.
✨️Dynamic Stretch: Warm up with controlled movements before activity.
✨️PNF Stretch: Combine stretching and muscle contraction for enhanced range of motion.

Stretching isn't just about flexibility—it's about working with your body's
proprioceptors! 🧠✨

1. Muscle Spindles detect muscle length changes and help the muscle contract, but
longer stretches reduce their signaling, allowing for deeper elongation.

2. Golgi Tendon Organs (GTOs) trigger muscle relaxation during prolonged stretches, helping you achieve a greater range of motion.

3. Regular stretching, especially at high intensity, trains these sensors to increase flexibility over time.

4. Prolonged stretches (> 60 seconds) may temporarily reduce strength—so keep flexibility training separate and opt for dynamic stretching before workouts! 💪

5. Eccentric strength training can be used as an adjunct with regular stretching to improve range, flexibility and reduce injuries!
