What really causes acne? Let’s break it down 👇
Acne isn’t about “dirty skin” — it’s a complex skin condition triggered by multiple internal and external factors:
🦠 Bacteria – Cutibacterium acnes, which lives on our skin, but when pores are clogged, it multiplies and causes inflammation.
🔄 Hormonal changes – Hormones (especially androgens) can increase oil production, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. Common during puberty, periods, pregnancy, or from conditions like PCOS.
🚿 Wrong homecare – Harsh cleansers, over-exfoliating, or using comedogenic products can disrupt your skin barrier and worsen acne.
😰 Stress – Raises cortisol, stimulating oil production and triggering flare-ups.
💊 Some medications – Steroids, lithium, and some birth controls can cause or worsen acne.
🧬 Genetics – If your parents struggled with acne, you might too—your skin type and oil production are often inherited.
🍭🍦 Sugar & dairy – High glycemic foods and dairy may spike insulin and inflammation, potentially worsening breakouts for some people.
