Let's talk about Nearsightedness in Children.

Myopia also known as nearsightedness is a common condition where children can see clearly at near, but distance vision is blurry. It’s unfortunetely becoming an increasingly common phenomenon due to our digital and indoor lifestyle.

📉 Why Do Children Necome More Nearsighted?
Myopia occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of on it.

⚠️ Warning Signs in Children:
🔹 Squinting to make objects appear clearer.
🔹 Sitting closes to the TV or screen in order to see.
🔹 Holding things very close while reading or writing.
🔹 Complaints of blurry distance vision at distance.
🔹 Frequent headaches or eye strain, especially towards the afternoons.
🔹 Poor performance in outdoor sports or activities or even at school due to unclear vision.

📈 What factors are playing a role:

➡️Increased screen time

➡️Less outdoor activity

➡️Genetics (If one or both parents are myopic)

🩺 How to Manage It:
✔️ Regular eye exams (at least once a year)
✔️ Myopia control lenses (e.g., special glasses or contact lenses)
✔️ Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) – Overnight lenses to reshape the cornea
✔️ Outdoor time – At least 2 hours daily is proven to reduce risk

👁️ Early detection is important to slow down progression and preventing future vision complications.

➡️ Mondays can often be seen as a difficult day as we transition back from a sleep schedule that has been disrupted over the weekend and also shifting from a more relaxed routine back to the routines of a workweek.

👁 Take care of your eyes this week by taking more frequent breaks when working on your digital devices, wearing sunglasses when outdoors and staying hydrated.
