As we settle into the start of 2023, take a moment to reflect on the words below. And as you do so, may you begin to realise that there is more to you and your story than yesterday, last week, last month or last year. Give thought to what you want to prioritise this year based on past challenges that you have learned from - is it health, well-being, family, boundaries, self-discovery, happiness? The challenges of yesterday can point to the journey of growth and change that lies in tomorrow.

One of the most common questions I hear in the therapy space is “won’t others think I am selfish if I put myself first for a short while?”

Being able to care for others [effectively and compassionately] requires that you care for yourself. The concept of “you cannot pour from an empty cup” is simple yet profound- care for yourself and your needs which will allow you to care for and meet the needs of others.

How are you caring for yourself?
Are you phrasing it as “selfish” instead “self-first”?
How can you pour into your own cup?

Some points of reflection to kickstart your week

One of the most common burdens that clients carry in to the therapy room is that of shame. Whether shamed by others or self, it is a heavy and painful burden to carry. Your therapy space is where the load of shame can be unburdened, gently and carefully dissected, and then beautifully redefined into something meaningful that you are able to own. It takes courage to explore the feeling and experience of shame. Therapy is wonderful place to start that healing process.
