Today is World Tuberculosis Day 🌍

As biokineticists, we have many tools in our rehab “toolbox”, one of the more nifty gadgets we use to give patients objective data is the PAB, or Pressure Air Biofeedback. This device uses air pressure to measure strength, endurance and performance of a specific muscle.

Feedback is given in real time which makes it an ideal diagnostic and rehabilitation tool.

The patient applies pressure to a balloon type object, which is connected to a computer, which measures the rate of displacement by the muscle being tested.

The data captured is displayed in easy-to-understand graphs of average, max and relative strength. The therapist can compare affected vs unaffected limb and draw conclusions about the function and neuromuscular control of the muscle or movement in question.

The results can also be used as a benchmark to measure improvement throughout a season or exercise programme.

This particular device is also useful in that it is portable and it can test almost any movement angle, which means strength imbalances and ratios between muscle groups can be tested.

It is also highly sensitive, measuring in microseconds, or 100 recordings per second, this gives useful information on the time taken for a muscle to reach its max strength and thus, an indication of the neuromuscular control of a specific movement
