What is the NHI? The National Health Insurance is essentially a scheme that aims to provide quality health care for all South African citizens. quality health care has not or is not so readily available for the South Africans who live in rural areas. The NHI was proposed as a way to combat that and have equal and quality health care for all citizens. The NHI will be a free service for all South Africans. So the question that remains on most South Africans minds is that Will there still be a need for private medical aid? Well, according to the proposed national health insurance bill, yes, there will still be a need for private medical aid for the services that the National Health Insurance does not cover which still does not answer the question because the services that will be covered under the national health insurance are still very unclear.
