🦷 Why does my child have TWO rows of teeth? 😲
You’re not imagining it and you’re not alone!
This common stage is called “shark teeth” and it usually happens when permanent incisors start erupting behind baby teeth.
👉 Why does this happen?
• Permanent teeth normally erupt behind the primary teeth
• Baby teeth are supposed to loosen and fall out as the adult teeth push forward
• Sometimes the baby teeth don’t fall out on time, so the adult teeth come in behind them
👉 Is this normal?
✔️ Yes, very common between ages 5–7
✔️ Often the tongue pressure and chewing help the baby teeth loosen naturally
✔️ Once the baby tooth falls out the permanent tooth usually moves forward on its own
👉 When should you be concerned?
⚠️ If the baby tooth is very firm
⚠️ If both teeth stay in place for several months
⚠️ If there is crowding or difficulty with cleaning
Early assessment is important to ensure proper alignment, spacing and jaw development. Sometimes a simple baby tooth removal is all that’s needed to guide the permanent tooth into the correct position.
✨ Tip for parents:
Don’t wait until all the adult teeth are in. Early dental visits help prevent future orthodontic problems!
