Switch Board number 011 535 3000

Tara Hospital is a Specialised Psychiatric Hospital, and we provide tertiary / quaternary level psychiatric care. For our outpatient services we work strictly according to catchment areas as well as the required level of psychiatric services. For inpatient services Tara Hospital has waiting lists for all the inpatient programmes / wards and priority is given to patients currently admitted to an acute unit and requiring longer admissions for stabilization. Tara Hospital does not have a casualty / emergency department, and we do not have an onsite laboratory of radiological services. Should you arrive at Tara without an appointment you will be assessed by our doctor on call and managed accordingly. Should you require admission, a referral to an acute hospital will be made as this may require medical work (laboratory and radiology). In case of an emergency and to avoid the delay of the Tara Hospital needing to transfer the patient to an acute facility it is recommended that you go directly to your nearest casualty. Referral is done by means of a referral form completed by your treating psychiatrist. This The form can be obtained from Tara Admissions by calling 011 535 3064 and returned to Thulani.Mabasa@gauteng.gov.za

• Patients are placed on a waiting list and are accepted for admission when a bed is available or as per multidisciplinary team assessment (for specialised units).
• Patients are referred by psychiatric units in general hospitals, psychiatric registrars or consultants working at community clinics and psychiatrists in private practice.
• Patients following up at Tara may also be placed on the waiting list when admission is needed.
• Patients with serious medical or physical health conditions will be assessed for suitability on a case-by-case basis as we do not have access to onsite physician or surgical support, neither onsite laboratory nor radiology services.
• We do not provide substance rehabilitation services.
• The outpatient departments and pharmacy operational hours are 7:30 to 16:00. Vision

World Mental Health Day is celebrated annually in October. The purpose of this day is to improve the mental health of individuals and society at large including the promotion of mental well-being, the prevention of mental disorders, the protection of human rights and the care of people affected by mental disorders. Tara Hospital held their 2nd annual nursing research day on the 14th October 2025. The purpose of the day was to provide a platform for nurses to share their research, experiences, and insights that contribute to quality and evidence-based psychiatric nursing practice. We believe through research, nurses are able to strengthen their clinical judgment, and give a voice to the unique challenges and successes of psychiatric nursing.

We had two internal presenters: Sr H. Khumalo and Dr C. Noutchie (PhD), we also had two external presenters: Mr I. Masondo from Weskoppies hospital and Ms R. Coetzee from Wits university.
The day sparked meaningful reflection, dialogue, and pride in the work nurses do.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a major cause of cervical cancer, is preventable. Protect yourself by avoiding risky behaviours such as unprotected sex, having multiple sexual partners, and early sexual activity. HPV can also spread through skin-to-skin contact and is more likely to occur in individuals with existing STIs. Women living with HIV are especially vulnerable, often affected between ages 15 and 49.

On 6 August, Tara Hospital lost not just a colleague, but a bright light in our nursing family. Family, friends, and colleagues came together for a moving memorial service to bid farewell to our fallen soldier.

Sr. Masela was a dedicated nurse whose passion for caring knew no limits. Friendly, outspoken, and full of life, her presence could be felt in every space she entered. Her laughter, kindness and unwavering commitment to her patients and peers will be deeply missed.

Losing such a young, beautiful and vibrant soul has left an unfillable void in our hearts. Tara has lost more than a nurse, we have lost a sister, friend and a beacon of compassion.

"The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." – Psalm 34:18

Sr. Katlego Masela will be laid to rest on 16 August. The church service will be held at 978 Motaung Street, Tladi (Lutheran Church), thereafter gathering will be at the family home - 2943 Morotho Street, Naledi.

May her soul rest in eternal peace. 🕊️

Mandela Day Celebration
To mark Mandela Day, Tara recently dedicated 67 minutes by preparing garden beds and planting vegetable seedlings in the OT Garden, as well as planting 30 trees across our grounds. This initiative aims to empower our patients with the skills and resources to grow their own food, helping to reduce food insecurity. A special thank you to Bowmans Law Firm and the Department of Agriculture for their generous donations and support.
Together, we’re planting seeds of hope.
