As you start your holiday shopping, remember: the best gifts are not just fun, but safe and developmentally supportive too. ✨

Here’s what to keep in mind:
🔍 Check age recommendations: small parts can be choking hazards
🧠 Choose toys that spark creativity and build motor or thinking skills
🌿 Opt for non-toxic, durable materials
📦 Avoid toys with sharp edges or loose batteries
👶 Simple doesn’t mean boring: open-ended toys offer the most room to grow

Toys should bring joy, not risk. Let’s give our little ones the safest kind of wonder this festive season! 💛

How screen time affects children’s behaviour, even from 6 months.

More and more studies show that early screen exposure can affect how children behave, focus, and regulate emotions. As tempting as screens are for a moment of calm, they may contribute to:

🔹 Increased irritability
🔹 Tantrums and meltdowns after screen time
🔹 Shorter attention spans
🔹 Difficulty settling or sleeping
🔹 Delayed social and emotional skills

From as early as 6 months, children learn best through real-life play, movement, and connection with caregivers, not passive screen watching.

💡 Tip: Start small, swap just one screen session a day with something sensory, social or creative.

If you want to find the most dangerous thing in the room… just put your child down, they’ll find it every time!

Curiosity is how little ones learn (and why childproofing matters). 😉

Bright, bold and full of benefits! 💜
Beetroot might not be every kid’s go-to veggie, but it’s packed with fibre, vitamin C and natural nitrates to support energy and brain health.

Roast it, blend it, or bake it into brownies – the colour alone makes it fun!
Cool tip: Mix cooked beetroot into hummus for a bright pink dip kids love.

Every check-up is a chance to learn, play, and connect.

We take time to make sure each visit feels calm, supportive and filled with care, for parents and little ones alike. Because a happy, relaxed environment helps children feel safe and confident while we look after their health.

Type 1 diabetes can develop suddenly, and recognising the early signs can make all the difference.

Here’s what to look out for. Common symptoms:
🍹 Increased thirst and frequent urination
🍞 Extreme hunger with weight loss
😴 Unusual tiredness or weakness
🫥 Mood changes or irritability
😮‍💨 Fruity-smelling breath or rapid breathing

If you notice any of these, especially in combination, it’s important to contact your doctor. Type 1 diabetes is manageable with early diagnosis and support.

As temperatures rise, children lose more fluids through play and activity, and they don’t always realise when they’re thirsty.

Here’s how to keep hydration simple and fun:
- Offer water regularly throughout the day
- Include hydrating snacks like watermelon, cucumber and oranges
- Limit sugary drinks and keep juice as an occasional treat
- Pack a reusable water bottle for school or outings
- Watch for signs of dehydration such as dry lips, tiredness, or fewer wet nappies

Small sips often make a big difference. 💛

About Dr Maraschin

Affectionately referred to as “Dr Rico” by our little patients, Dr Enrico Maraschin attended Wits Medical School from 1981 to 1986, where he was awarded his MBBCh. In 1994, Dr Maraschin further graduated as a qualified paediatrician from The College of Medicine of South Africa.

Dr Maraschin started his private practice in early January 1995 at the Morningside Mediclinic. Well-known among the community, Dr Maraschin is highly regarded with providing superb care for babies, toddlers and kids. He has played a pivotal role in creating his well-deserved prestige. With a particular interest in neonatology (premature babies), allergies, immunology and vaccinology; Dr Maraschin’s dreams is to establish an outreach programme, which allows him to offer quality healthcare to underprivileged children and parents. In the interim, he is involved in a number of charitable organisations in an attempt to providing medical service and uplifting those who need the support the most.
