Hand writing ✨
Do you have a school going child that has difficulty writing?
This might include sore hands or fingers during writing, illegible or inconsistent writing, fatigue during written tasks, and not finishing work in time.
Writing is a complex developmental progression, and difficulty often stems from underlying building blocks ✨
As parents and teachers, if we want to improve writing you can take it a step away from writing drills, and try these instead ⬇️
✒️ build finger + hand muscle strength by working with clay, therapeutic grade putty, or dough
✏️ build postural muscle strength by working against a vertical surface or inclined surface
🖊️ reinforcing letter formations and letter construction by practicing letters and words using various mediums such as sand, clay or dough
🖍️ use various writing tools especially those that encourage a dynamic tripod grasp which is most efficient for writing. Large chalk or build up chalk handles.
Often doing traditional writing drills does not address the underlying building blocks needed for writing.
✨Developmental Building Blocks✨ for writing include:
▫️hand strength
▫️dexterity
▫️postural endurance
▫️bilateral integration
▫️midline crossing
▫️ocular function
▫️visual perceptual skills
▫️fine motor skills
▫️penmanship skills
▫️sensory integration
When an OT evaluates why a child is having difficulty with writing, these are some of the areas we assess to holistically understand why a child might be facing challenges.
