YES, occupational therapy (OT) can help children with problem-solving skills 🤔 💭

We use this Problem Solving Wheel to facilitate prompts throughout our activities and sessions to improve problem solving as a skill 🤩

Occupational therapy equips children with practical skills to navigate and succeed in their daily lives.

Why is problem solving important? 💡

We all want our children to doing what’s expected for their age - playing, moving, thinking, talking etc. and to at the right time become independent.

OTs might work on problem solving through:

Cognitive-focused activities:
Puzzles, sequencing games, and strategy-based activities can help improve mental skills like memory, attention, and problem-solving.

Real-life scenarios:
OTs can break down real-life scenarios into smaller parts to help children learn how to solve problems in a safe space.

Board games and games:
Strategic board games can help develop problem-solving skills.

Mazes:
Guiding a pencil through a maze can help improve concentration and problem-solving.

Obstacle courses:
Planning and navigating through an obstacle course can help develop problem-solving abilities, physical coordination, and creativity.

It falls part of an umbrella term called Executive Functioning Skills ☂️

These executive functioning skills can be quite tricky to master
🧐 🧠 💫

Did you know that OTs can assist the development and support of executive functioning skills for primary and high schoolers.

Lets take a closer look at WHAT Executive Functioning and Higher Cognitive Skills mean -

Executive Functioning Skills guide everything we do. From making decisions, to staying on track with an activity, to planning and prioritizing a task.

Executive dysfunction can interfere with independence and the ability to perform activities.

The cognitive skills are an interconnected web of processing that allows for self-regulation, planning, organization, and memory.

💫 EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING SKILLS:

Emotional Control
Task Initiation
Task Completion
Working Memory
Planning
Prioritizing
Processing Speed
Organization
Attention
Self-Monitoring
Impulse Control
Cognitive Flexibility
Foresight
Hindsight
Self-Talk
Problem Solving
Persistence
Shift

Executive functions are heavily dependent on attention.

OTs use specific activities designed to assist children and adolescents in building executive functioning skills so that they are able to work independently and efficiently in daily tasks.

Stay tuned for ideas, activities and parent support for executive functioning at school and home 🤩

Alternative postures for Fine Motor Skills 🤩

Looking for some creative ideas on HOW to play fine motor games that also support postural muscle development? Swipe left 🤩

One of the biggest building blocks is postural endurance - just being able to maintain a good sitting posture with out being overly restless, wriggly or fidgety 😬

If a child can’t maintain a sitting posture, it’s going to naturally be quite difficult to then manage fine motor tools like scissors or pencils for drawing or writing.

You can encourage these alternative postures to build postural strength to help develop fine motor skills.

Why do we play fine motor games in DIFFERENT positions? 😁

We are working on postural stability, making it more challenging in some ways, supporting the development of postural muscles in other ways ✨

Toileting and using the potty can be TOUGH 😩🚽

Especially when you have a child who needs developmental support (but to be honest, toileting is tough for most kids in one way or another!)

Have you tried toileting modifications?

We’ve put together some of our favourites! 🤩

What adaptations have you tried at home or school?

As OTs we love looking at the barriers to occupations - these are the things we DO in our day - and for kids, using the toilet or potty is a big part of what they do in their early childhood.

Hand writing ✨

Do you have a school going child that has difficulty writing?

This might include sore hands or fingers during writing, illegible or inconsistent writing, fatigue during written tasks, and not finishing work in time.

Writing is a complex developmental progression, and difficulty often stems from underlying building blocks ✨

As parents and teachers, if we want to improve writing you can take it a step away from writing drills, and try these instead ⬇️

✒️ build finger + hand muscle strength by working with clay, therapeutic grade putty, or dough
✏️ build postural muscle strength by working against a vertical surface or inclined surface
🖊️ reinforcing letter formations and letter construction by practicing letters and words using various mediums such as sand, clay or dough
🖍️ use various writing tools especially those that encourage a dynamic tripod grasp which is most efficient for writing. Large chalk or build up chalk handles.

Often doing traditional writing drills does not address the underlying building blocks needed for writing.

✨Developmental Building Blocks✨ for writing include:

▫️hand strength
▫️dexterity
▫️postural endurance
▫️bilateral integration
▫️midline crossing
▫️ocular function
▫️visual perceptual skills
▫️fine motor skills
▫️penmanship skills
▫️sensory integration

When an OT evaluates why a child is having difficulty with writing, these are some of the areas we assess to holistically understand why a child might be facing challenges.

What are your biggest challenges during writing?

A grasp pattern refers to the positioning of the hand on an object, or the type of grip used by the fingers and thumb to hold, manipulate and use objects.

Variety is good - we want to see children use a combination of grasp promote refined coordination in motor skills, or finger dexterity. For example - the way you hold a hey is different to how you scoop cereal from a bowl using a spoon.

We will be focusing on two types of grasps over the next few weeks - pencil grasp progression and functional grasps ✨

In OT, we see some of these common grasp problems:
🖍️ when a young child holds their pencil with a grasp that does not allow full function
🖋️ penmanship skills when a child / teen is given longer more detailed writing tasks and their pen grasp is not optimal
🍴 when a grasp does not allow for functional use of eating utensils and affects feeding skills
🛁 when a child’s grasp range and skill affects their functioning in every day tasks such as bathing or dressing. For example - can they open their toothpaste and use a toothbrush using a variety of grasps.

Follow for more as we look at pencil and functional grasp progression by age.

SUPINE FLEXION POSTURE

This simple posture is packed with developmental benefits, and is so well researched it even has its own age norms 🤩

Challenge 🥇 can your child hold this posture? 🥈 can they hold this posture with good control?

Posture ~ Lying on back with arms crossed over chest, legs bent and head lifted off of the floor. The child then flexes their legs and lifts head from the floor (like a “crunched ball” position).

This posture plays a vital role in developing the anti-gravity strength of your child’s head, neck, arms, legs, and trunk.

This position also develops the vestibular system and body awareness.

FUN FACT - children can often hold these for longer than adults. Do you think you can take on your child and see who can hold “the snow ball” position for longer? 😅

Did you know 💡 It can also be used as a diagnostic assessment tool for a child who has any difficulty with other motor skills coordination, balance, or any sensory integration issues. Because how a child assumes and maintains this posture tells us so much about their developmental systems (from babies to adolescents!)

Want some ideas on how to include Supine Flexion?

AND is your child able to hold this posture for the prescribed time? 😅 let us know 🤩
