On let us shine the spotlight on children born with spina bifida. This defect results form incomplete closing of spine and its membranes that cover the cord.

When mild- it is inconsequential to the person born with it but when severe may need correction with surgery. The condition is associated with shortage of folate in the blood of the pregnant mother or use of certain medications during pregnancy.

Many times, the defect is associated with excessive accumulation of water in the brain. We advocate for early surgery for those children needing surgery to prevent infection and subsequent decline in function.

Early safe surgery improves function outcomes on these children and allows them to grow to be independent adults.
