Muscular dystrophy awareness month 🌼

Every September, the healthcare community campaigns to raise awareness, educate, promote research for treatments and cures, and secure funding for support services for individuals living with muscular dystrophy.

Biokineticists play a crucial role as part of the healthcare team for MD patients. A huge congrats to one of our very own, , for completing the 2025 Wally Hayward Marathon!

Trav is one of the hardest working patients we have. Besides the hours and hours he puts into training, he also visits us about once a month for some maintenance work. This allows us to keep him healthy and strong, and to stay on top of any niggles he picks up. He finished this marathon a minute shy of his personal best, despite the insane total elevation gain.

We are so grateful to Trav for choosing our practice to keep his body in check!

Based on current published estimates, close to 300 000 women lose their life due to pregnancy or childbirth each year, while over 2 million babies die in their first month of life and around 2 million are stillborn. And these are just the recorded numbers. That’s roughly 1 preventable death every 7 seconds.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Let’s take a minute to acknowledge what Women’s day is truly about. It’s a day that we set aside to remember and appreciate the suffrage of women and their battle for liberation and equality. A movement that continues today as we work towards creating a society in which women are given equal opportunity and reproductive rights, and one that strives for the elimination of gender-based violence and abuse.

Let’s take a look at our history:

In South Africa, white women were afforded the right to vote in 1930. Black women only won this right in 1993. Women were given the right to sign legally binding contracts, register businesses, seek employment, and open bank accounts without the consent of their husbands in 1995. The dismissal of pregnant women became prohibited in 1997. Gender discrimination in employment became illegal in 2000. Equal remuneration for work of equal value became mandated in 2015.

Today, we face a persistent gender-based violence crisis in this country, with particularly alarming statistics. We still see a 32.5% gender pay gap at the monthly level for work of equal value. Women account for only 26.5% of senior management positions, while men account for 73.5%. Women also face blatant discrimination in healthcare, which fundamentally begins with substantial gaps in medical research, and manifests as delayed diagnoses, inadequate symptom management, avoidance of medical care due to mistreatment, abuse, harassment, neglect, and death.

Ladies, we clearly still have a long way to go in creating our ideal world. So LET’S KEEP FIGHTING! 🤍

Chris is the latest addition to our team. She joined us in 2023, but she has since made herself right at home.
