🥊 Boxing Injuries: What You Need to Know 🥊

Boxing is a demanding sport requiring speed, power, and precision—but it also puts your body at risk for specific injuries. Here are the most common ones we see in the clinic:

🔹 Wrist & Hand Injuries – Sprains, fractures, or tendon strains from repetitive impact
🔹 Shoulder Injuries – Rotator cuff strains and impingement due to overuse
🔹 Elbow Pain – From hyperextension or repetitive punches (e.g., boxer’s elbow)
🔹 Neck & Upper Back Tension – Caused by defensive posture and rapid head movements
🔹 Concussions – Always serious, requiring medical attention and guided return-to-sport

💡 How Physio Helps:
A physiotherapist can reduce pain and inflammation, and guide you through strength, mobility, and rehab drills specific to boxing. Early treatment = faster recovery & injury prevention. 🧠💪

📍Whether you’re a pro or just hitting the bag for fitness, don’t ignore the niggles. Book your physio session and keep your punches powerful and pain-free!

📌 How too much load too fast in training causes injuries

1️⃣ Load vs. Capacity Mismatch

Your tissues (muscles, tendons, joints) have a certain capacity to handle load. If you increase load too quickly—by suddenly lifting heavier weights, running much farther or faster, or adding too many high-impact sessions—they don’t have time to adapt.

Result: microscopic damage accumulates faster than repair.

2️⃣ Common Injuries from Rapid Load Increase
• Tendinopathies
• Stress fractures:
• Muscle strains:
• Joint/ligament injuries:
• DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) can be more severe if overload is excessive

3️⃣ Key Training Errors Leading to Overload Injuries
• Sudden large jumps in training volume (e.g., running 10 km when used to 3 km).
• Too high intensity without gradual build-up.
• Poor rest/recovery.
• Ignoring pain signals.
• Bad technique, which increases abnormal stress on tissues.

4️⃣ Physiotherapy Treatment Options

✅ Acute Phase (reduce pain & protect)
• Load management: temporary reduction or modification of activity.
• Ice/heat as needed.
• Gentle range-of-motion and isometric exercises.
• Education about pacing and load management.

✅ Subacute Phase (restore mobility & strength)
• Controlled, graded loading exercises.
• Soft-tissue techniques or dry needling (if indicated).
• Mobility work for stiff joints or tight muscles.

✅ Rebuilding Phase (gradual return to sport)
• Progressive resistance training to build tissue capacity.
• Plyometrics or sport-specific drills.
• Movement retraining and technique correction.

✅ Prevention/Education
• Load management plans (e.g., 10% rule for runners).
• Periodisation guidance.
• Rest/recovery strategies.
• Technique optimization.

Watch this space…

MAP classes: create the space you want to strengthen into.

Specific Benefits of Breathing on Fascia

1. Fascial Hydration and Glide
• Deep, rhythmic breathing causes gentle movement through the trunk and rib cage, which helps hydrate fascia and improve its ability to glide and function.
• This improves tissue elasticity, reduces stiffness, and lowers risk of injury.

2. Tension Release
• Chronic shallow breathing contributes to tight, restricted fascia, especially in the neck, shoulders, and thoracolumbar region.
• Conscious breathing helps release myofascial tension, allowing for better movement and less discomfort.

3. Enhanced Interoception
• Breathing mindfully increases awareness of your body’s internal state (interoception), which supports better movement coordination and injury prevention.

4. Diaphragm-Fascia Relationship
• The diaphragm is a major fascial anchor point; when it’s activated properly, it improves movement and tone across the thoracolumbar fascia and pelvic floor.
• This creates a balanced tension system, improving stability and reducing compensatory movement patterns.

✅ Summary

Practicing breathing techniques isn’t just about relaxation—it directly influences fascia health by:
• Enhancing tissue mobility
• Reducing chronic tension
• Improving hydration and oxygen flow
• Supporting healthy posture and core engagement

Incorporating just a few minutes of intentional breathwork daily can lead to profound changes in your musculoskeletal health, injury prevention, and recovery.

Managing Stress and Tension: A Physiotherapist’s Guide to Restoring Body & Mind

Chronic stress doesn’t just affect your mood — it takes a toll on your body too. Increased muscle tension, poor posture, HEADACHES, neck and back pain are common physical signs of stress overload.

As physiotherapists, we help you treat the physical symptoms of stress while empowering you to build long-term resilience through:

🔹 Breathing Techniques – Diaphragmatic breathing to calm the nervous system

🔹 Stretching & Mobility Exercises – To relieve muscle tightness, especially in the neck, shoulders and back

🔹 Postural Correction – Addressing tension caused by poor work-from-home or desk setups

🔹 Hands-On Therapy – Targeted soft tissue release and joint mobilisation

🔹 Movement & Exercise Programs – Regular physical activity reduces cortisol and boosts mood naturally

🔹 Mind-Body Connection – Education on how stress affects the body and practical tools to manage it

💡 Movement is medicine – not just for injury, but for emotional wellbeing too. Let us help you feel better in both body and mind.

I believe golf is good for your lower back. All the old timers that play golf after retirement have better mobility and less back pain compared to the guys that don’t play golf.

Incorrect technique will cause pain in the lower back, but repetitive rotation can keep you mobile. Just also be strong into rotation.

GOLFER’S ELBOW

Symptoms
• Pain and tenderness on the inner side of the elbow
• Stiffness, especially in the morning or after inactivity
• Weak grip strength
• Pain radiating along the inner forearm
• Numbness or tingling (sometimes) in the ring and little fingers
• Worsening pain with wrist flexion or gripping objects

INJURY PREVENTION FOR GOLFERS

• Warm-up: Always warm up before playing.
• Strength Training: Focus on core, shoulder, hip, and forearm muscles.
• Stretching: Especially for the shoulders, hips, and hamstrings.
• Swing Mechanics: Work with a golf coach or physical therapist.
• Equipment: Use proper clubs and grips that suit your body type and swing.
• Cross-Training: Avoid repetitive strain by mixing up activities.
