Why would a Speech-Language Therapist (SLT) use Water Play?

Water play isn’t just splashes and giggles with our paediatric clients — it’s a powerful tool in speech and language therapy! Here are a few reasons why your SLT at Project Communicate Speech-Language Therapy might bring out the buckets, cups, and bubbles during a session:

💧Encourages Communication
Water play creates a natural environment for requesting (e.g., “more water!”), commenting (e.g., “big splash!”), and following instructions (e.g., “pour the water in the cup”). It’s a fantastic way to build vocabulary and sentence structure!

💧 Supports Sensory Regulation
Some children seek out or avoid certain textures and sensations. Water can be calming or alerting, helping children feel more regulated and ready to engage in communication.

💧 Promotes Social Interaction
Taking turns pouring, filling, and splashing encourages important social skills like joint attention, sharing, and waiting. Perfect for little ones learning to interact with others!

💧 Enhances Fine & Gross Motor Skills
Scooping, squeezing, and pouring strengthen hand and finger muscles needed for gestures, sign language, and even writing skills in the future!

💧 Fun Motivator for Engagement
Let’s be honest—kids love water play! When therapy is enjoyable, children are more engaged, making learning feel effortless.

The next time you see an SLT incorporating water play, know that every splash has a purpose!

A LITTLE ABOUT FAHMEEDAH

Hello everyone,

I'm Fahmeedah, but feel free to call me Famz. As a dedicated Speech-Language Therapist, I'm thrilled to join Project Communicate SLT. Holding a bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Class of 2022, I subsequently completed my community service at Harry Gwala Regional Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. This invaluable experience has equipped me with a deeper understanding of diverse patient needs and solidified my passion for delivering compassionate care.

My areas of interest include adult neurology and swallowing disorders, supplemented by ongoing professional development courses in both adult and pediatric rehabilitation.

Beyond my professional pursuits, I value community engagement through volunteer work and embracing new experiences. In my free time, I cherish moments with animals (I have 2 dogs and a cat that are a part of my family), exploring scenic nature walks from the beach to botanical gardens, discovering hidden gems in local coffee shops and trying out new restaurants with friends.

I am eager to be a part of your therapy journey and contribute to our shared goals for the future!
